Arthur Curtis of Oxford, born 1898 was my grandfather. He was married to Olive Ivy Surridge, also of Oxford (St. Ebbs) - they had 7 children. I have found census records for him up to 1940 living in Oxford, but somewhere between this date and 1945 he disappeared. No further census records showing him as living in Oxford, although his wife continued to do so. I would love to know what happened to Arthur, as no death certificates can be found in this country from him despite a professional ancestor hunter looking! Please contact me if you have any knowledge of him or are possibly a relative. :-) Thank you!

I'm not seeing an appropriate birth registered for an Arthur H Curtis 1898 in Oxford.

Where was Arthur actually born?

Angie

Angie Report 23 Sep 2013 00:06

Thank you for your help PricklyHolly. The "H" stands for Henry - please could you try and see if there is an appropriate birth registered for Arthur H Curtis 1898 in Coalville, Leicestershire? This is another possibility.

Do you have the marriage cert as it would be useful for the name and occupation of his father

Where some one marries is not any indication of where they might have been born

Thanks PricklyHolly - but DOB for Arthur is 1898 in Coalville, Leicestershire. His father was called Albert Curtis, who was also born in Coalville in 1873.

So that would be him in the 1911 census i posted?

Angie

Angie Report 23 Sep 2013 00:21

Albert's occupation was a collier.

Angie

Angie Report 23 Sep 2013 00:23

Yes, that's him on the 1911 census indeed! Great, thank you!

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 23 Sep 2013 00:27

What about the 2 death entries i posted.

Are they possibilities?

Angie

Angie Report 23 Sep 2013 00:30

I've really no idea at all about where/ when he died, so both could be possibilities. The only family "story" I have heard about his disappearance is that he left one day after an argument with his wife, never to be seen again. He was on the census of 1940, but not after that in the family home.

GlitterBaby Report 23 Sep 2013 00:33

Sure you mean electoral registers and not census

PricklyHolly

PricklyHolly Report 23 Sep 2013 00:40

I can only suggest you purchase copies of the above death certs.

They will give you information as to who registered the death and exactly where the death took place.

From that information you might be able to trace the person (Or family members of that person) who registered the death.

I would probably purchase one cert at a time and hope that the first you purchase is the correct one.

Having said that......it might not be either of them!

Thanks for all your help PricklyHolly - it's certainly worth a try! :-)
