You started by asking for James born 1878. |

Thank you all so much for guiding me in the right direction, One thing i know for sure is my James is not from Wigan or Leeds as I been able to follow them both up to 1911 where they are both in their respective places. I am looking at the post from Dea, with the spelling of Tarphe, this looks promising. |

Thanks Marie. I just wanted to check before you started spending money on certificates that you had made sure that James was the right one as there are one or two around. |

I really think that is the only possible birth cert for 'your' james - this is the GRO reference if you are going to order it: |

Once again thank you all so much, this is certainly a very steep learning curve. I found my gdads other siblings through F/B. This is how I got started as I was so shocked to learn this. I only ever knew him and I only heard of his brother John because of his boxing career. |

Do you mean 12 in 1891? |

Dea | Report | 16 May 2013 08:13 |
Sorry Marie, - It can't be that one (James Turpie) as he is on 1901 with new wife and 4 children, still in Bolton, same occupation and his birth shows in Dec. 1869 in Manchester as 'Turpie' . |

Hi Ann, yes this is him, my gparents lived in this house when I was little, I just about remember it. What does 'probate index' mean? I have been doing this for about 2 weeks now, it feels like I've been doing it for years though. driving my other-half mad. |

Not that quick I, afraid. You will be checking the post every day now and be disappointed when no letter. They take about a week to be despatched. |

probate - if someone leaves a will it has to go to 'probate' for validation. the probate is given to the executors named on the will who are then legally able to carry out the bequests specified in the will. |
