No wonder you cannot get to the record offices and rely on the boards and your dodgy postal service |

Quite a lot of the Lancashire Parish registers are also on line so again you can download the actual image and don't have to buy the cert. |

probate - if someone leaves a will it has to go to 'probate' for validation. the probate is given to the executors named on the will who are then legally able to carry out the bequests specified in the will. |

Not that quick I, afraid. You will be checking the post every day now and be disappointed when no letter. They take about a week to be despatched. |

Hi Ann, yes this is him, my gparents lived in this house when I was little, I just about remember it. What does 'probate index' mean? I have been doing this for about 2 weeks now, it feels like I've been doing it for years though. driving my other-half mad. |

Sorry Marie, - It can't be that one (James Turpie) as he is on 1901 with new wife and 4 children, still in Bolton, same occupation and his birth shows in Dec. 1869 in Manchester as 'Turpie' . |

Hello, I think i have breakthrough, i have a James Turpie approx the right age 22, in the 1891 census, born Manchester, now in Bolton. it states son, the head of the household is his mother Rebecca Hughes, widow age 42. |

Once again thank you all so much, this is certainly a very steep learning curve. I found my gdads other siblings through F/B. This is how I got started as I was so shocked to learn this. I only ever knew him and I only heard of his brother John because of his boxing career. |

I really think that is the only possible birth cert for 'your' james - this is the GRO reference if you are going to order it: |
