Find Ancestors

Can anyone help with my Scottish side of the family my Grandmother Janet Miller b.1890 so many girls born at the same time called the same. Mine married Robert McMorran b. 1888 in Roxburghshire. For my English family I use FreeBMD to confirm births deaths and find marriages but Im stuck when it comes to the Scottish side of my family any tips on my searching greatly received. :-)

You need to use Scotlands People - excellent site.
It's not a subscription site - you'll have to buy credits. £7 for 30 credits.

Ancestry has Scottish census records to 1901, but for 1911 (also earlier ones, of course) and BDM's you need Scotlands People.

There's no free equivalent to FreeBMD, though you might find something on Family Search.

Is there something in particular you want to know about your grandmother?

Im not after anything in particular just who was she who was her Mum and Dad and siblings because Ive never really known anything about her. My family tree is very lop sided hardly anything on it.

This is the only marriage in the whole of Scotland between people of those names, between 1900 and 1920:

Looks like Robert McMorran Hymers is a first cousin of Robert. Maggie Hymers looks to be a sister of David McMorran and that looks like his younger brother Robert living with the Hymers.

Looks as if Robert McMorran's parents didn't marry until between 1891 and 1901. And Elizabeth Scott Robertson may therefore have been illegitimate, but adopted by stepfather David after marriage.

If you buy credits for Scotlandspeople and look for BMDs for the above after Statutory registration began in 1855 you will be able to confirm that these are the correct people for your family.

Scottish certificates give more information than English ones. e.g. Scottish death certificates give the names of the parents of the deceased including the mother's maiden surname if the informant knows the details.
