Thank you everyone for your most valued contributions, I am slowly filling in the life of my Grandfather who led a somewhat unusual life with a variety of partners; more 21st century than early 20th.
Despite the disappointment of her marriage by grandmother remained friends with Cecil and they corresponded up to their deaths

When Mabel Janet returned from New York she had 2 children with her. Could this be the little girl?

I suspect that Mabel was actually born as Copsey:
England & Wales, FreeBMD Birth Index, 1837-1915
Name: Mabel Janet Copsey Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1889 Registration district: Greenwich Inferred County: London Volume: 1d Page: 1016
and I don't think Henry and Janet from the 1901 married until much later than implied:
England & Wales, Marriage Index, 1916-2005 Name: Henry D Damiral Spouse : Janet G Copsey Date of Registration: Apr-May-Jun 1930 Registration district: Lewisham Inferred County: Kent Volume Number: 1d Page Number: 2365

Wonder if this is Mabel in 1901?
DAMIRAL, Henry Head Married M 34 1867 Storekeeper ( R Ars) Greenwich, Kent DAMIRAL, Janet Wife Married F 34 1867 Brightlingsea, Essex DAMIRAL, Mabel Daughter Single F 11 1890 New Cross, London
Piece: 573 Folio: 74 Page: 4 Registration District: Woolwich Civil Parish: Plumstead
Address: 37, Bramblebury Road, Plumstead County: London
Looks like the father may have been a storekeeper at Royal Arsenal which could be how Mabel and Cecil met?
EDIT: According to the 1911 Henry was a book-keeper at the Royal Arsenal, they's been married 18 years and had no children born to the marriage?

Not finding a birth for her, but she's on a tree on Ancestry. No mention of the liaison with Cecil or the children to him but it has to be her.
Some lovely photos, she was very pretty.
If Trevor doesn't have access to Ancestry then he could look on the sister site Mundia, which is free. You can search and view trees and contact tree owners. http://www.mundia.com/gb/

Think I've tracked the son and mother:
London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965 Name: Cecil Richard Sladen Year: 1937 County or Borough: Westminster Ward or Division/Constituency: City of Westminster Street Address: 16 Denbigh Street
Several people at that address including a Claude Gerald and Mabel Janet Bridgman.
There is this marriage:

Have just come across this old thread: http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/records_office/thread/730934
Would be worth Trevor attempting to get in touch with the poster.
In her post she thinks that the info about the 1901 marriage for Cecil Gordon was incorrect: "I don't think that is the right one sorry, as Cecil Gordon married a Mabel Demmerill."
Aha, now we have Mabel's surname. The son is named as Cecil Richard Sladen born 30/3/1913 New York.
I'll put a link to this thread on there.

Going back to that possible 1939 marriage I posted, there is this:
London, England, Electoral Registers, 1832-1965
Name: Cecil G Sladen Year: 1964 County or Borough: Carshalton Ward or Division/Constituency: Carshalton North West Street Address: 8 Prince of Wales Road
Now, I know this is dated 1964 and he died 1963 but it depends on the timings. Gladys is alone at this address on the 1965 ER.
