Hi there,
My relative John Toy was in the Durham County Gaol in 1851 whilst his wife Bridget was with her in-laws in Hetton-le-Hole, County Durham (James and Sarah Toy).
I am wondering if John appears on the criminal register so I can see his misdemeanour?!
Cheers,
Peter

Hello Peter, when/where was he born (in case an age is mentioned)?
What relation is he?

Thank you MarieCeleste - actually, I don't know his age. He married my distant aunt Bridget Welch/Welsh in 1847 in Houghton le Spring, County Durham ... does his appear on the 1851, and does his wife appear on the 1851 with her in-laws? She was born c. 1827 in Ireland.
Also thank you for the 1850 crime records. So he was in court for theft and seems he was punished for something also (to be in solitary for the final two weeks)?!
Thank you AnnCardiff also - not sure about the 1850 newspaper but the 1881 stray may connect. I am just not sure yet.
Thank you again!

Ah thank you - I have been looking on the IGI for the family of JOHN AND BRIDGET but never thought his mother was a WELCH also.
So is that his father in the 1850 prison document?! Hang on ... is he in prison for being mentally ill?
Also, just checking my Burial Index - a Sarah Toy was buried in Houghton le Spring in 1874 aged 88 ... can you see if she is on the census?!
Thank you!

Thank you Ann - yes I agree, imprisoning someone for being mentall ill is awful.
And Bridget and John Toy had a few children ... Sarah shown above died aged three.
I'm curious to find the OTHER marriage of James Toy and Sarah Welch?! Wow complicated.
