Where does the Nye come from in the Eaton name

There is a marriage record for W Nye and Amelia

Who and Where does Mary Ann Jorden come into things...

No answer to your original query at present, just looking at possible theories!.

Believe that :-

William Eaton was always William Nye.
Amelia Eaton was born as Amelia Eaton'

Believe he was not free to marry Amelia in the beginning.
William and Amelia lived together as man & wife using the surname of Amelia ie Eaton
when they were able to be married they had to pretend that William Eaton had died because really he did not exist.
William Nye ( ie William Eaton ) and Amelia Eaton married officially but she gave her maiden name as "Austin" which was the 2nd christian name of her father who was John AUSTIN Eaton


If you look at the children of William " Eaton"and Amelia you will see that their 2nd christian name is Nye. see below

I think Mary Ann Jordan was William Nye's wife Died 1892 which would account for the 94 marriage.

As you can tell i'm not very good at this.

In the 1861 census a William Eaton was listed with a father John but I should have been looking for a Nye.

Again I found a marriage cert for William Nye with a Mary Ann Jordan in1859 and a census record in1861 showing William with Mary and a Charlotte age 0 which seemed to fit

Hi Anthony to be fair your family is not the most straightforward one to trace.

Can you show us the marriage for William Nye to this Mary Ann Jordan because I cant find it.

I still think it was probably Mary Ann Roberts as the only thing different from the marriage to amelia was the grooms fathers name . On Amelias it was William Nye occupation Engineer and on the marriage to Mary Ann Roberts it was George Nye occupation Engineer. Could be that sometimes he bent the truth a little ?

I'm sure your right that Jordan was not the wife

Have sent Anthony copies of the two marriage for William Nye which show that the grooms signature has been signed by the same man.

Looking at the facts,


William Nie was born St Lukes 1840

William Nye was born St Lukes c1840

Both have a father called William

William Nye b 1840 marriage to Mary Ann Roberts produced a daughter named Charlotte SARAH ( Sarah was William NIE's mothers name)

Sarah Ann Nie nee Wager was born Hackney

William Nie and Sarah Wager were married in Shoreditch

Sarah Nye ( possibly Sarh Nie) died in Islington/


All sounds a very good percentage to me.

I do think that William born c1840 bent the truth a little bit but that maybe because he was only about 12/13 when his father died and perhaps he didn't know that much about him?
