Find Ancestors

Hi everyone
How do you know if you have found the right ancestor's birth records if there is no mothers maiden name? I am trying to trace my whole family back asfar as possible and at the moment I am having great difficulty tracing great grandmothers family.
My great grandmother's married name was Ellen Ruth Herbert born 1912 she passed in 1990 her maiden name was Herbert her mothers maiden name was Long I do know that they were from Bristol and at some point my great grandmother ended up in Pontardawe where she married my greatgrandfather William Henry Stevenson. I am unsure if her family came to Pontardawe aswell.
My greatgrandmother had sisters Edith, Rose, Harriott and brothers Ernest or Ernie, Ron or Ronald and Stan or Stanley. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes that is her birth I found that no problem at all but I don't seem to be able to find the others which is quite infuriating and I can't find mothers birth records either

Who are Dawson Frederick William Bristol 6a 142 and Southwood Alice Maude Bristol 6a 142 ? Sorry I am quite new to this :-S

Unfortunatley not, I know that the family were from Bristol so I searched all birth recordds relating to Ellen Ruth Herbert born 1912 and Long was the only match.

I am unsure if Rose had a twin I asked my mother about Violet and she remebers something but wasn't sure of details. They could all quite possibley be her siblings

Sorry, Amanda.- marriages are recorded two per page - I posted all four people as it only a possible marriage for your couple but looking at the 1911 census, I would think that is the correct marriage. You can order the cert on line from the GRO. quoting the volumn and page nos given above.

To find the births for the children born after the above census, use freebmd:

Search using Herbert for the surnam and Long for MMN. For the ones born before 1911, you can only use the surname

There are possible births for Ruth Long on freebmd but you would be better buying the marriage cert to find out her father's name and then trying to find her on the census. There is more than one of the same name born about the same time in the right area.
