You have to buy credits for Scotlands people website to see 1911 Scottish census....and the birth registrations
There is no other source.
It is not a subscription site, so lookups by GR members are not an option

Although managed for the National Record Office of Scotland by GR's parent company, it is independent of GR with its own web address.
You can make free searches, but need to buy credits for the details.

oh Goodness thanks so much for this I wasn't expecting it .Now I'm going to look at a map to see where they lived and find out what a cloth lapper does .hopefully I can find some living cousins worldwide for my aunt ,in her 80's now that I have birth dates for Her aunts and uncles and spelling variants . My father always insisted it was spelt MacDermid which does seem to prevail as the family became more literate I suppose . can't thank you enough

Alisoun,
It is worth noting that Scottish Statutory registration didn't begin until 1855.
Scottish certificates give more information than English ones. For example a birth after 1860 will give the date and place of the parents marriage. Marriage certificates give the names of both parents including the mother's maiden surname. Death certificates will name all spouse and the names of the deceased parents, including the mother's maiden surname if the informant knows the details.
Scotlandspeople is fairly cheap to use £7 for 30 credits, 1 credit to view search results and 5 to view / download the register entry or census image. Births less than 100 years ago, marriages 75 and deaths in the last 50 years cannot be viewed online, you have to order certificates for these.

a cloth lapper weaves yarn The names are interesting because I see that our g gparents gave first names of both their dads to 2 sons and the maiden name of maternal grandmother to daughter Jeannie i remember my grandmother explaining a complicated system of 1st daughter's having maternal grandmothers name but don't remember what middle names were given to 2nd + 3rd daughters. If grandads siblings carried on these traditions some of my dad's cousins will have the same names .somethinng to look out for in p0st 1901 births and marriages to help distinguish the dozens of mac/Mcdermids from cumbuslang on the family trees . I'll use credits to trace war records ,passenger lists and maybe deaths to see if I can find what happened to my grandads siblings ; I must say they seem a fertile and hardy bunch ....no sign of infant deaths as names reappear in consecutive censuses

Scottish Naming pattern (often used by the Irish too - well in my family anyway!)
First son named for paternal grandfather Second son named for maternal grandfather (sometimes with his surname as a middle name) Third son named for father First daughter named for maternal grandmother (sometimes with either her married or maiden surname as a middle name) Second daughter named for paternal grandmother (sometimes with either her married or maiden surname as a middle name) Third daughter named for mother (sometimes with maiden surname as a middle name)
From memory, when I was searching last night, I think that Andrew R. Kyle had been married twice. I think that David Kyle had a different mother. Andrew's death registration may confirm that.

hang on I need time to check all that it's very confusing when the names all reappear in all the generations and my Grandads brothers had a25 year age gap between youngest and oldest Grandad's brothe Walterwas born circa 1897 so would have been 19 in the ww
the older walter married to margeret with kids must have been Gdads uncle , the same names of the first born children keep cropping up for obvious reasons and I expect spouses called agnes and margeret were common. luckily the naming system shows me that this walter is definitely ggdad malcoms brother, so their 1st sons would have 2nd names but 1st daughter and 3rd daughters name come from thier maternal side we dont have an Isabella or elizabeth in our sibling list .For fun my sister and I worked out what we'd be called if we'd carried on this tradition .2nd daughter I'd be Mary (stephenso )macdermid

The "naming system" is a clue, not a hard and fast rule so take care. I've often found names which didn't add up but eventually they turn out to be named after, for example, a recently deceased child of a brother or sister, and even simply a respected public figure.
Also, your middle name would be Stevenson not Stephenson according to your OP. Good luck and take it slowly! :-)

Alisoun, if you have the chance, visit the Scotlands People centre in Edinburgh. For 15 pounds You can use their search rooms and computers from 9 a.m. to 4.30 pm weekdays. You can also have a free "taster session" ..a couple of hours with experts to assist you. This is a good way to learn the system.
Regarding spelling variations, obviously these are worse the further back you go but usually by the 20th century there is consistency. Errors in the statutory (post 1855) period are usually caused by census enumerators in the presence of illiterate citizens.
As a general rule a Mac name is of Irish origin and a Mc is Scottish.
