Hello, I am trying to trace William. His mother was Catherine Nolan, husband John Nolan (apparently Catherine's maiden name was also Nolan). William's other siblings were John, Bridget and Marianne. Sadly I do not have dates of births for any of this family but on the 1901 Census Catherine is given as 50, William as 19, John as 18, Marianne as 20 and Bridget 17. So far as I know they were all born in Co. Roscommon and it is thought that Catherine and John married in or around 1878 could plus or minus a few years either side of this date. Am trying to help a work colleague whose ancestors these are.

He knows what happened to all the siblings apart from William although he doesn't know dates etc.

He says that William also known as Bill and Willy left Ireland and travelled to Australia, not sure when but he believes not long after 1901. Also not known if he travelled from Ireland or came to England to sail. If anyone finds anything then I will post a thread on the Australia board on Ancestry.

I can't seem to find the rest of the family in the 1911 Census, if anyone can find anything then please let me know.

I have also posted this message on the Ireland Board on Ancestry.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards

Kathryn

Well, this looks like them in 1911 but the ages are all over the place!

Kathryn - the 1901 & 1911 Irish census are free to search and view http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie

Looking at the original form someone has definitely tampered with some of the ages. Catherine's was definitely 60 before it was changed.

Hiya, yes this is the family. I have a copy of the 1901 Census and note from what you say about the 1911 Census about the ages, I couldn't find them in the 1911 Census. Will have to look again.

Now, you see William is not there. I do not have credits for FMP but there are a few Williams who travelled to Australia whose birth were circa 1882. Is there any where I can find the dates of birth for the children, especially William as he is the mystery one that my colleague is looking for. He says William definitely went to Australia and he thinks he didn't marry before he went. I know it is so difficult to search in Ireland. I note also even from the 1901 Census that William's father, John is not on the Census. Perhaps he died prior to 1901 or was working away but if I remember rightly it didn't say on the 1901 Census that Catherine was a widow then.

Kind regards

Kathryn

Sorry, I meant to say firstly thank you for your time and help.

You're very welcome Kathryn!

This thread has some good tips about Irish research
http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/951721

You could also have a look on FamilySearch https://www.familysearch.org

Ancestry also has quite a lot of Irish records. I have to go now but am sure someone else will have a look on there for you. If not, I'll look tomorrow.

Hi, once again thank you for your time and help. I too have to go now as I have to be up really early tomorrow but will be back at my computer around 11am if anyone is willing to help with this quest please.

Kind regards

Kathryn Report 29 Sep 2012 12:09

Hi, am back now. Have posted a message on some other threads and hopefully someone reply at some point. Does anyone please have subscriptions to Find My Past that could possibly look at the William Nolan's leaving England for Australia. I typed in Williams name, birth 1880 plus/minus 5 years and going to Australia. There are three, one birth date 1878, one 1880 and one unknown.

Have now found Catherine and the other siblings in the 1911 Irish Census, no wonder I couldn't find them before. As you say their ages have been tampered with, not sure why that would happen but it puts them way out of the proper age.

Thank you in anticipation.

Kind regards

Kathryn

Came across this, don't know if it's your William but thought I'd post in case it's useful later on.

Australia Death Index, 1787-1985
Name: William Nolan
Death Date: 16 Dec 1925
Death Place: Queensland
Father's Name: John Nolan
Mother's Name: Catherine
Registration Year: 1926
Registration Place: Queensland
Registration Number: 000014
Page Number: 1312

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 15:01

This is one of the outgoing records:

Passenger lists leaving UK 1890-1960

Name: Wm NOLAN
Date of departure: 26 July 1911
Port of departure: London
Destination port: Melbourne
Destination country: Australia

Date of Birth: 1878 (calculated from age)
Age: 33
Marital Status: Single
Sex: Male
Occupation: Farm Hand
Notes:
Passenger recorded on: Page 7 of 19
Ship: GEELONG
Official Number: 118426
Master's name: D C Simmonds
Steamship Line: P & O Branch Service
Where bound: Australia
Square feet: 14502
Registered tonnage: 5029
Passengers on voyage: 736

He's listed in the English column, not the Irish. But, also next to him in that column are a Murphy and a Kavanagh so don't know if the person doing the list was just lazy and put everyone as English.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 15:04

and another:

Passenger lists leaving UK 1890-1960

Name: Wm NOLAN
Date of departure: 15 March 1912
Port of departure: Liverpool
Destination port: Melbourne
Destination country: Australia

Date of Birth: 1880 (calculated from age)
Age: 32
Marital Status: Married
Sex: Male
Occupation: Farm Lab
Notes:
Passenger recorded on: Page 26 of 32
The following people with the same last name travelled on this voyage: -
Florence NOLAN age 21
Margaret NOLAN age 1
Wm NOLAN age 4

Master's name: Thos Howell
Steamship Line: White Star
Where bound: Australia
Square feet: 32094
Registered tonnage: 8612
Passengers on voyage: 1294

Those other Nolans are his wife and children. They are listed as English, not Irish. The person doing this list does seem to have put other passengers in the appropriate columns.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 15:08

and finally:

Passenger lists leaving UK 1890-1960

Name: Rev Wm NOLAN
Date of departure: 11 April 1913
Port of departure: London
Destination port: Sydney
Destination country: Australia

Date of Birth:
Age:
Marital Status:
Sex: Male
Occupation:
Notes:
Passenger recorded on: Page 32 of 39
Ship: ORVIETO
Official Number: 129628
Master's name: W S Shelford
Steamship Line: Orient Line
Where bound: Australia
Square feet: 15116
Registered tonnage: 7421
Passengers on voyage: 981

No occupation given but seeing as he's a Rev it gives us a clue! Previously lived Ireland. No age, just indicated as adult.

EDIT: Found his arrival in Australia and his birth year was c1876.

None of the above three records give any indication of previous addresses or next of kin.

Kathryn, re: the ages altered on the 1911 - it's only Catherine and John's that was altered, the girls weren't yet they're vastly different.

How can you know which is the correct ages for them (on 1901 or 1911)? Does your colleague have any more info? Does he know when any of them died so we can try to verify age from death record?

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 29 Sep 2012 15:29

Not seeing anything conclusive for the others on the Australian arrivals (or earlier ones).

Kathryn

Kathryn Report 29 Sep 2012 15:31

Hello Marie, WOW, you have been busy on my behalf and I thank you so much for all the information provided. Personally I think the death you found is William as it seems too much of coincidence that his parents are John and Catherine, or am I just getting over excited. No on the Irish Census' it is stated that Catherine is a Farmer also two of the Williams on the passenger lists are to do with farming. My colleague will be so pleased with this find as am I. Am wondering if I should post something now on the Australia board on Ancestry to see if anyone can find him in the electoral roll although I suppose until perhaps we have an exact date of birth maybe it's not a good idea. What do you think Marie? Or where if anywhere can we go from here?

Thank you once again for all your time and help. If anything else comes to mind or you find anything else please let me know. I just can't believe how much you've found already. I think I should give up work and really get into research as I only have limited spare time.

Kind regards

Well, I have access to the ER - but they don't show ages. I'll have a look.
EDIT: I've had a quick look and there are way too many to know which would be him. The ERs show neither age or birthplace.

Meanwhile, two useful sites for you to try (haven't looked for him on there myself)

Trove - Australian Newspapers http://trove.nla.gov.au/

NAA - Australian National Archives http://www.naa.gov.au

Kathryn - you should really amend your heading of this thread to include Australia, that way our Australian experts are more likely to see it.

Kathryn

Kathryn Report 29 Sep 2012 16:01

Hi again Marie, thank you so much once again. I will speak to him on Monday and see if he knows the birth and/or death dates of the other siblings. You have been so helpful, it would take me a month of Sundays and more to get where you have if at all. Am just about to check the two links you have given me. Oh, I've just added Australia to the heading. If it's not right please let me know ie if I should word it differently.

Kind regards

Hi Marie, I put a notice on the Australian Board and the William you found the death for was sadly born in Queensland. I am in the process trying to find out where to send off for William's birth certificate and how much it will cost. I think in all the circumstances this would be the best way and then hopefully we will have an exact date of birth etc. I am so grateful to everyone for their time and help but probably once we have the birth certificate then we may be able to move forward and not be chasing a red herring so to speak. What do you think Marie?

Kind regards

Hi Kathryn - if you follow that link I posted above about Irish research somewhere in there it explains about obtaining Irish certificates.

Hi Marie, thank you so much. Have now found the application form. Once I have the date of birth I will come back to this thread with William's date of birth.

Once again many thanks for your time and help and of course of everyone else who has contributed to this thread.

Kind regards
