You could look at the 1841 census to see if it is possible to identify the 1840 bride by her name. Follow that up by looking at the 1851 census in an attempt to identify the 1840 brides birthplace. |

The marriage to Mary Drysdale was in 1846 but a tree on Ancestry has his parents as George and Mary so I don't think this is your one. |

Thanks Chris I now have a Mary Drysdale ,a Mary Davison and a possible Mary Drummond (1842 durham) who all could be the Mary Ann Drummond on the 1861 census very confusing |

Well the 1861 census for Mary Drummond is so clear and it has the initial A and she is married and a master seamens wife. So if William remarried in 1869 to Emma Purdy I wonder if they got a divorce or Mary Ann died?? |
