In 1841 Margaret is alone with 5 children

Perhaps she was a single parent who later married a Henry somebody.

If someone could post the household of 1851 with William recorded as a son in law ( stepson maybe) to the head of the house, it might give some clues.

Santa ..... " I don't see any other Henry Mercer births in Prescot around that time. "

It was never established that Henry Mercer was born in Prescot ( or that he even existed for that matter)

Would be interesting to know if she was a spinster or a widow.

Marriages Mar 1855 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

***Bellis Robert - Bolton 8c 255
HARDMAN James Bolton 8c 255

***MERCER Margaret - Bolton 8c 255

EDIT :

Marriage: 19 Feb 1855
St John the Evangelist, Farnworth with Kearsley, Lancashire, England

Robert Bellis - (X), 40 Mechanic Bachelor of Farnworth

So it looks like she was born Margaret Byron

Which means that the marriage I posted earlier look like the right one

Dear all, I am not ungrateful, I posted on here hoping for hints , help , etc.
I didn't expect a squad of experts to appear and practically do my reasearch for me all in 1 day ?
You are all extremely adept at this and I want to thank you very much.
You overwhelmed me with you assistance but didn't teach me ( I don't know how you got from A to E with steps B,C and D missing ?)
I would be thankful of any hints on how to do it , where to look etc (eg what is Lancashire OPR ?)
Again, you are amazing and thank you

ErikaH Report 20 Jun 2012 09:39

If you google Lancs OPR - you'll get there

I'm sorry, but you really have a bit of a nerve - saying we didn't 'teach' you.

You didn't answer our questions, and never once provided a solid FACT.

You posted on 'Find Ancestors' which is what people tried to help you to do.

From your original post

Looking for a Henry Mercer and his son William (B1837/8) . There are links with Salford and possibly Prescot where William was possibly born ?
I have William's marriage and death cert's but cannot find birth or mother's name ?

No mention of 'hints' - just a statement that you wanted to find two males

If you want to 'learn' how to research your family, buy one of the plethora of books on the market - or join your local FHS. Or, if you are retired, the U3A in your area probably has at least one genealogy course running
