Curious though that she would bring her Jordan children to Canada calling them Hurlbutt. If Mr. Jordan was still living, wonder what he thought about that?

MarieCeleste Report 27 May 2012 14:23

It is odd, but perhaps Mr Jordan was a bad lad and she was escaping him? It's also odd that the eldest son had been intended to travel but crossed off the list. The younger children would possibly have no idea what their names were recorded as.

Of course, Albert Jordan may have been unaware of events.

They may have inadvertently been recorded as Hurlbutt (but I doubt it)

DOVER EXPRESS - Friday 18 March 1904
Monthly sitting of Dover County Court

Administration Order

Re: Albert Walter Jordan, a marine porter who had kept a tobacco, sweet and newsagent shop in London Road applied for an administration order. The debts amounted to £19 12s 9d.

The debtor said he now lived 122 Clarendon Street. He earned as a porter 20/- wages and about 4/- gratuities. He had about £5 worth of furniture, the rest was hired. Prior to opening the shop he was a labourer at Pearsons. He attributed his failure to his wife's illness, and the fact he lost his employment for a time.

His Honor - "But that gave you more time for it?"
Applicant - "Yes, but there was no wages to help."

Applicant said that he was now in work again, and that he could pay his way while that continued. He offered to pay 15/- per month. His Honor ordered applicant to make payment in full at the rate of 7/6 per fortnight.

Mr R Mowell who appeared for the judgement creditor Mt T W Rogers, said that hw wished to ask whether the applicant did not sell his business for £12?
Applicant - "Yes, and I paid off what I could of my debts with it."

Well, I'm waiting with bated breath, Marie Celeste. Are you a 2-finger typer like me? I wish Shelagh would come back to see what she says about all of this.

Very interesting, MC! I decided to look at the 1901 census to see what they were doing. He was a labourer at a paper mill. (Wonder if that was Pearsons?) Address then was 34 Randolph Rd. William Bescott was a boarder.

Many thanks to all!! Lots to think about. I haven't been able to find deaths for the 1st spouses before 1920 so ........ They travelled to Canada as a married couple with her children, obviously a moonlight flit! I will research his children with Mary Burn and may uncover something!
Cheers

Marie

That probate record you posted for an Albert Walter, he left over £9K so maybe thats not him.......or he made some money later in life :-S

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 May 2012 16:04

No, I think you're right Gins. This is most likely the death for that probate record:

Surname First name(s) Age District Vol Page
Deaths Mar 1960
JORDAN Albert W 78 Thanet 5b 972

so the 1969 one is quite likely a contender.

Hi,going back to 1911 census, the eldest Jordan son was Frederick Percy b 1898. He must have stayed aged 22 in 1920.

MarieCeleste

MarieCeleste Report 27 May 2012 16:32

Sorry Shelagh, if you meant my earlier comments I meant the oldest of the sons that had been on the shipping list and then crossed out - namely Alfred.

Did he decide for some reason at the last minute that he couldn't go with his mother and her new man? Did he not fancy Canada?

Found Albert Walter Jordan's service records:

British Army WWI Service Records, 1914-1920
Name: Albert Walter Jordan
Document Year: 1919
Regimental Number: 542594
Regiment Name: RE
Number of images: 30

He actually was in several regiments, moved around a bit.

He was born Deal, Kent and was 39 when he enlisted 16/11/1914, occupation marine porter. Next of kin given as wife (not named) 5 Saxon Street, Dover.

He was shot in the head 24/03/1918 in France. He spent time in the American Hospital in Rouen and then two months in hospital in Sheffield. He was operated on but it appears to have been a superficial wound which left a scar behind his right ear and some thickening of the bone. He also had varicose veins but refused an op for them. He was fitted with dentures 02/07/1918. He was granted furlough for 2 weeks after leaving hospital and was headed to The Villas, Relsely nr Bakewell, Derby.

He was eventually discharged 23/04/1919 on the grounds of disability (which was assessed as being less than 20% and was mainly due to the varicose veins). His address upon discharge was to be 5 Dee View, Hawarden near Chester.

He had a completely clean conduct sheet.

British Army WWI Medal Rolls Index Cards, 1914-1920

Name: Albert W Jordan
Regiment or Corps: Royal West Kent Regiment, Royal West Kent Regiment, Royal Defence Corps, Royal West Kent Regiment, Welsh Regiment, Royal Engineers
Regimental Number: 203791, 22403, 20357, 7265, 207081, 542594

He was awarded the Victory and the British medals.

(I'm now starting to feel really sorry for poor Albert, he didn't seem to have much luck in life poor blighter. Tried to start a business and ended in debt, served his country and got shot in the head, then his wife goes off with a dashing sea captain . I'm probably getting too involved and over romanticising!) :-(

Shelagh Report 27 May 2012 18:55

Hi,poor Albert! His marriage must have been on the rocks if he went to Chester in1919.She left the country in 1920 so perhaps she didn't like his new false teeth! I have found a marriage for Fred P Jordan in 1923 to Florence E Hawkes so I'll do a bit digging on Ancestry.
Thank you for all your help by the way.
Regards
Shelagh

If I find any more snippets about any of them I'll add them.

Hello. I'm descended from Andrew Hinman Hurlbutt and Mary Alice Burn.
I'm fascinated by the information you've unearthed about his leaving Mary and going to Canada with someone else. His daughter Annie, my grandmother, was his eldest child b 1891 and his youngest was Arthur born approx 1912, so would have been young when his Dad left home. I recall Arthur was a grumpy person, no wonder. I have a picture of Andrew Hinman Hurlbutt and also one of Mary Alice Burn, but don't know how to attach them here.

Andrew's father, William Hurlbutt, came to Britain from Connecticut, running away from his Puritan family, with an artist friend called Alexander Hinman. The 2 friends stayed close all their lives, married sisters, and named their children after each other (hence Andrew's middle name). I can't find William's parents or where he came from. If you can shed any light on this I'd be very grateful.
Meg

Hi Meg - might be an idea if you click on Shelagh's name to send her a message letting her know about your connection. I'm sure she'd be pleased to hear about it, as it's been a few months she mightn't be checking this thread for further replies. You can also attach the photos to your direct message.

Will have a look for William's parents and, if Shelagh doesn't mind, will put the info on here as it's of some relevance.
