Find Ancestors

I've researched the le Scrope family but am a little stuck about Eva and I'm after official records if that's possible.

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction, please, so I can check the parentage of:

Eva le Scrope, b abt 1350
(supposedly to Richard le Scrope & Blanche de la Pole)

who married

Henry de Dyghton, b abt 1350 in Dalton, nr Huddersfield?

Would there be a marriage entry in Dalton or would 14th century records not have been kept or kept elsewhere?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Parish records were not started until the mid 1500s & very few survived until the early 1600s.
Prior to that you would need to look at the manorial records which may have survived & if they have, they will be held in the County records Office.

I have some of the leScropes in my tree.
Eva was the daut of Baron Richard le Scrope 1327 - 1403 (sometime Lord Chancellor) and Blanche de la Pole. She married Henry de Dyghton and they had a son William de Dyghton b 1360 so she married before that. There are no reliable records of her marriage, dowry etc. There is another marriage 1379 but prob. of a different Eva.
de Dyghton is pronounced Dutton and that is the modern form of the name.

The best comprehensive free online original source for this period in English (of a sort) are
(a) Yorkshire visitations - but remember that several important families refused to participate for various reasons and are poorly represented
(b) Yorkshire fines at the National archives
There is any amount of tosh on Ay mostly logged by Ameicans although there is some good stuff too. Always check it against orig sources eg NA.

Parish records only got started around 1540 many were lost , no record made especially 1640-1660 and in any case the parish churches were for the most part ignored by the aristocracy who had their own private chapels.

A distant relative had told me that Eva married Henry de Dyghton but believed she had been born about 1350. Obviously if she had William in 1360 her birth-year was before 1350. Eva flummoxed me but I did find an Ivetta Scrope who was, I believe, the daughter of Geoffrey and Ivetta so wondered whether Eva could have been a derivative of Ivetta and began to think that Geoffrey and Ivetta were her parents. Would you be able to confirm where I can find Eva and the lead to her parents, Richard le Scrope and Blanche de la Pol, please?

My source, like you, said that Richard and Blanche were Eva's parents and Henry and Margaret de Ros were her grandparents. As Henry was the father of Geoffrey and William the paternal line would be the same but the maternal line for Eva would be different. My contact went quite a few generations back following the ancestral lines (one led to Alfred the Great) but sites on the net had varying ancestors around 1034 to 1056 and I came unstuck in my quest to discover the truth. Both le Scrope and de la Pole are notable families so there must be some official record already known to the general public - but where to look for it, I wonder?

You're right, I did come across what I thought was a load of tosh but I never could discount it because I could not find Eva.

Can you point me to a reliable source to follow down through the ages, please? Are there any books on the history of le Scropes?
