I have been able to trace my ancestors to 1844 and can't seem to find their birth records : I have the year of birth for both ancestors but neither comes up. When I put just a basic surname for the years in question ie: 1822 and 1924 the system tells me it can find no matches. I have since tried it with lots of different surnames but it still can't find even one name: Anyone know why?

Gail
If you would like to post some details of names and area of birth, I'm sure people will do their best to help.

Where are you searching?
Civil registration did not start in UK until 1837 and not everyone bothered to register births at first, but there may be parish registers available

Thank you everyone: I'm trying to find a birth certificate for Reubin Poller born 1824 in Warwickshire; maybe I'm being too ambitious - I have tracked him to be my great great great great grandfather although having trouble with the spelling of Reubin: this chap Reubin shows up as Ruben and Reuben: and within a ten year period I have found two marriages in Birmingham, both to a Mary but ten years apart; after all this, I'm probably tracking the wrong guy

Gail

As others have so rightly said, there wasn't such a document as a birth certificate until the introduction of Civil Registration in July 1837.

Also, as there weren't any penalties for not registering until 1875, a lot of births went unrecorded between 1837 and that year.

Many people felt that baptism was more important, and simply ignored the concept of civil registration.

Got a pm from Gail.

You've hit where I'm stuck exactly! Those are the two which are getting me confused. What I think I know is that Reuben and Mary had a son Christopher Frederick and then I keep getting lost. My great grandmother was Esther Poller, born in Warwickshire, later married and became Taylor. My main problem is I have absolutely no definate records other than a death record of Esther, so I have been trying to trace that line back for ages. I have loads saved to favourites and I'm getting in a spin.

Thank you for your help!

alviegal

alviegal Report 7 Apr 2012 21:12

Gail, is your Esther the one born in 1812, daughter of Christopher and Elizabeth, that Catherine has found above?
If not, could you tell us a bit more about her please?

Gail

Gail Report 10 Apr 2012 19:01

Esther Poller married either a Charles or William Taylor and had three daughters, one my nan Lilian May Taylor (now dead), Dorothy Taylor (died last year) and Edna who is still alive. Esther died in 1969 and I found a death record matching that. The death record said she was born 4 November 1882 although I have learnt through this that no dates are accurate, as my nan's death record stated her date of birth as the wrong one - that I think was down to my aunty who registered the death and probably put the wrong date on. She died in Staffordshire although the village she lived in Kinver usually hold the records at Bilston, however, I cannot find Bilston listed in any record, so the record I hold for her is registered in Dudley, which is just down the road from Kinver so it may well be the right one.

What I am finding really difficult is finding so many records of people living and dying in the same area around the same time with the same names. My favourites collection is really big. What I'm going to do next weekend is get a big A3 piece of paper and physically draw the tree and print out all the records I have found which I think might be that person. If I can see it all in front of me instead of spending hours re-looking at this and that on the computer, I might be able to make head or tail of it, or at least see some sense to what I'm looking at.

None of my family can give me any details which is wholly frustrating. I can't even trace my grandfather, other than his death record, so I'm coming to a full stop on that too.

My starting point was that I know how old I was when grandad died, my nan and my great grandmother, Esther, and where they died - not much to go on eh? :-S
