My Ellen married Alexander Rankin in Manchester Cathedral on 24th January 1870.
It states Ellen's father as Peter McLean, occupation Cutler (I wonder if with knives in the army) and Alexander's father as William Rankin, sawyer as living at 10 Broad Lane Cheetham, Manchester and Eleanor (but she signed it Ellen) as living at 148 Rydal Mount, Cheetham, Manchester
Alexander Rankin is Age 22 and Eleanor/Ellen is Age 21.
The witnesses are William Hallam and Alice Kray
Married by H.H.Westmore, Minor Canon.
My Dad used to say his Gt.Granny came down from Scotland and went in service in Manchester and when I 'googled' 148 Rydal Mount it came up with Housemaids residence...!
I really think the army is very likely

I have reams of information on them, but I just really can not get further back with Ellen's Scottish connections
Have been on Scotland's People and have a pile of papers, but I am not happy with them somehow and just can't prove anything as the Father, Petr always seems to be missing! and I have marriages, but I really don't know if I have a right one at all! :-|

Yes Maureen, that is definitely my family in Cheadle

So we know she was born about 1849 in Midlothian, Scotland and her father's name was Peter.

I also know that Ellen died in Heaton Norris in Stockport, Cheshire, on 15th December 1897 Age 48years old. A Rankin, joiner, is widower of deceased as I have a Death certificate

I have never been able to find a definite Birth for Ellen to work back, as I have never known her Mother's name for definite, only her Father's,

I can not find either her, or Alexander, her husband on a 1891 census anywhere! I can find 3 daughters, living with relatives in various locations in Manchester and Heaton Norris... but not Ellen and Alexander.. it is a mystery, I tell you! :-|

Just as an aside , have you traced Alexander's family back. Is he definitely from Manchester and has he got any Walker's in the family. Just wondering where Caroline's middle name came from.

Yes Secret Red Squirrel Thankyou,I wondered that but I have traced Alexander Rankins family back to Ireland..
The Walker is Alexander's sister's (Eliza) husbands side and therefore Caroline 'Walker' Rankin Eliza and Edmund Walker were probably Godparents, as Caroline is living with them on the 1891 census in Manchester..also

I think the Walker comes through Alexanders sister-Eliza Jane...married Edmund Walker.

Edinburgh Records sent me that census form also, but it's the Irish thing that sort of throws me off...
My Father was absolutely convinced his Gt.Granny was from Edinburgh. I remember being on holiday in Edinburgh, as a child and my Dad keep saying he wished he knew where his Gt,Granny had lived so mmm.. I do know things get confused over the years though..

She's certainly elusive!
It doesn't help that I keep thinking the name is McNeil. Getting a bit punchy! :-)
