Born on January 27, 1850, in Hanley, Staffordshire, England, Captain Edward J. Smith, captain of the luxury vessel Titanic,

Smith married Eleanor Pennington. The couple welcomed their only child, Helen, in 1902.

Eight years later, Smith took his first command of a passenger ship, the Baltic. He went on to serve as the captain of several other vessels in the White Star Line. From 1895 to 1904, Smith commanded the Majestic. He also served in the British Royal Navy during the Boer War in South Africa

A new Baltic was added to the White Star Line fleet in 1904 with Smith as its captain. At 23,000 tons, the Baltic was one of the largest vessels at the time.

Well, thank you everyone. Now I know the family tale about Jane Bunting is only partly true. Funnily enough, I spoke to a distant relative this week who told me that he had heard only recently (I think from a Kent relative) that Jane took the children to the US after her husband had died - so even that tale was not the whole truth either.

Still no sign of Violet Bunting born 01.07.1864 so the search goes on as her last appearance that I can find is in the 1881 Census living with her parents, Robert and Jane Bunting in County Durham. No death and no marriage so I'll keep searching.

In the meantime, it's great to have the true story about Jane and family.

Well, back to the Bunting family as I want to try to 'put them to bed'.

I've tried several times over the past few months - trying Violet/Viletta/Violetta with Bunting/Bunton/Bounton and have still got no joy.

Is there any new member who is connected to this Violet/Violetta born 1864 at Newfield, Co Durham. I have a copy of her birth certificate now and her parents are, indeed, Robert and Jane.

Update: still got nowhere with the whereabouts of Violet Bunting (born 1 June 1864 - I bought her BC).

I've done an extensive search using Violet as the Christian name and using a couple of birth years surrounding 1864. After checking dates and marriages of them all, I'm left with one Violet with the surname Murray (born 1864 - it says in Durham, Newcastle). She is living at Brighton in 1901 with husband Alfred Murray and three children - Aileen (says b Dingwall, Scotland c1885 - but not found that birth (her married name Segre); Alfred b c1888 and Violet b c1894. Alfred the usband was born in Seaton, Devon.

However, I've not found a marriage for an Alfred Murray to a Violet so I'm still stuck.

Violet only appears as Bunting in the censuses for 1871 and 1881 - I can't find her after that.

I've checked and as I can't find another Violet Bunting in the Hartlepool area at that time I think she's mine.

Wonder what she did precisely and did she change her name upon release as there's no sign of Violet Bunting anywhere after that?

I've checked whether she adopted her late sister's name (Jane Elizabeth) but no joy. Her mum had died in 1882 and was it possible that her dad had already moved to his son's home in Newcastle where he died in 1889? (If she was a bit wild one I wouldn't be surprised.)

A mystery that we're unlikely to solve.
