I'm not sure why you ruled Samuel and Jane out as "your" Mary Jane's parents? 1871:
BLASHILL, Samuel Master M 37 1834 Yorkshire BLASHILL, Jane Matron F 37 1834 Yorkshire BLASHILL, Richard Robert Son M 11 1860 Yorkshire BLASHILL, Mary Jane Daughter F 3 1868 Yorkshire BLASHILL, Frederick Son M 0 1871 Yorkshire
Registration District:Hull Civil Parish: Holy Trinity Municipal Borough: Kingston upon Hull
Address: Hull Workhouse, Holy Trinity, Kingston Upon Hull County: Yorkshire
(Haven't posted all the poor souls who were inmates)
mgnv has posted the 1881 already.

We must be cross posting!
If they were brothers then that might explain why they named their daughters the same.
EDIT: Just noticed on the 1851 that their mother was called Mary, so that may have been what inspired them.

Yes Derek, I think it's wine o'clock ;-)
Just to clarify, that baptism I posted with Samuel as father, that's not a submitted record, it's a proper extracted parish record (although the later marriage IS submitted).
Don't think I haven't heard that one before!!

Odds & ends
From 1861 thru 1901, the Canadian census nominal date was either the same as the UK or the day after. In 1911 it was a couple of months after (1/6/1911). There is enough time to appear on both censuses - not that this is anything but a rare happening.
As MJ died 1951 in Ontario, that's a bit of a problem. Although deaths in Ontario aren't closed (so anyone can buy a d.cert), there is no index published for 70 y. It costs (I think) $15 to have them search 5y to locate the entry, then you can buy the d.cert (for $25 I think).
It's not unusual for a family with no rellies in Canada to have the hubby or maybe an adult son go out first to get things sorted, like jobs, accommodation, etc., then for the rest of the family to come out a year or so later. Happened maybe 30% of time back then is my guess.

Mgnv......your information is absolute Gold dust!!....I can'y thank you enough..I could not have expected such terrific stuff..such is the quality of your work and your willingness to delve for me..I surrender to the temptation to ask , like Oliver Twist. for more.
Since, in genealogical terms my relationship to William Gilchrist and his son Roland is quite close....William was my Grandfather's brother....could you possibly point me in the right direction towards finding details of the four children of Roland Gilchrist......Ada..Fred..Grace..William.....ideally 'twould be great tp get to living relatives, but I don't expect miracles...
I have sent for the relevant documents to sort out once and for all the parentage of mary Jane Blashill!!
Thanks again
Derek.

I tried to google Frederick's death to see if there was an obit. All I got were references to a M. C. Beaton book, one of the Hamish Macbeth mysteries, "Death of a Dentist". Evidently the dentist's name was Frederick Gilchrist. I've probably read the book, think I've read all of them in our library.

Ste Marie Among The Hurons was abt midway between Penetang & Coldwater. It was an early 17th cent jesuit mission, and the first European settlement in the N American interior. There's a modern reconstruction on-site. The nearby Wye Marsh nature reserve is also an interesting place to visit.
If there's lots of Gilchrists around, then it's probable some are family, maybe a bit distant.
Drill down at: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/index-e.html
especially to the census links page: http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/genealogy/022-911.009-e.html
Since there's more than 500 Gilchrists in Ontario in 1911, the best way to search on AG is: Click on 1911 at top right, then Ontario, then Simcoe East or North or South, then G, and check Gelchrist, Gilchrist, Gilcrist etc.
There's 1880ish concession maps for the various townships via: http://digital.library.mcgill.ca/countyatlas/SearchMapframes.php
Penetang was spread across the boundary of Tiny & Tay Twps, at the NW corner of Tay. Coldwater was in Medonte Twp, near the SE corner of Tay Twp
Drilling down on BMDs tells you that there's (supposedly) a 100y closure on births - but it looks like there's a couple of years leeway in practice.
