I,m thinking Sarah says she in married on 1901 census and widow by 1911?

even if you deduct 50 years marriage she would still have been an underage bride ? and Thomas death later than 1901 ??

Also wondering if the son born in Glasgow was registered whether his birth cert would be on line, cheaper , and maybe have his father,s army number recorded. just a thought?

Lindsey - she's widowed in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. The last one with Thomas on is 1881

I thought it probably was 51 years - perhaps she didn't realise that because he was deceased she didn't have to fill that in?

1860 certainly fits in with birth of first recorded child in Cape of Good Hope

Ah no Dea , in 1881 census he's at Colchester. Darn.

but Yvonne...he probably headed for Ipswich in 1878 because that is where Marian was born. And then by 1811 had moved to Colchester which is only 18 miles away. The only thing I would say is that in 1881 he was still with the military in a barracks which suggests his discharge was not completed in 1878?

The attestation in 1858 was probably before they married - hence no wife.

The only way you are going to find a marriage is to find Sarah's maiden name. It seems likely he had left India and was on his way back when he met and married her (hence the children in SA and Mauritius)

Oh I see , I thought you ment he'd completely left the army in 1878.
My thoughts were along the same lines given the migration and births.
Also she is born in Kingston Canada another military base? so they have met up somehow. Whether he was sent there or she travelled with her family.

Definately need to get birth cert. Does anyone have info on Alison Smith b1885 colchester as she was my great grandmother and if I am to buy a birth cert. I'd rather get hers.

Alison - from the censuses is a bit dodgy....1891 born 1882, 1901 born 1884, 1911 born 1885 and as Lindsey points out they don't all appear to have been registered. I'd go for Isabella - it's definitely the right family (from the census)

This of course is the problem with having such a common surname...at least you have some exotic birthplaces to pinpoint them. Me I have Llewellyn and Evans in Wales...ha ha!

I'm currently in corrospondance with Alfred's Grandson! He's shared his tree
But there's very little on it. I'm trying to pin him down on Sarah's maiden name . . . Tho he does have Alexandar as Thomas's father .. Fact or guesswork. . . It's hard to know isn't it?

Oh I just remebered another thing. On Alison's wedding cert. Her father is listed as a Clerk (deceased)? not a soldier. . .

Battalion were in England (which included Wales then) in 1871, and they moved to Ireland during the year, then to Scotland (1875), England (1876), and they were in India for the 1881 census. So he was in the 13thBattalion at the time of the 1871 census. The 1st Battalion were in Ireland for the 1881 census, so that is probably why you cannot find him in that one.
