I have traced my ancestors on my maternal grandfather's side up until John Mounser born c 1803. He was married to Amelia and was father to Arthur, John , Thomas and Eliza and died in 1848 in Howden, Yorkshire. I cannot find any information about his birth or marriage and would like to find out who his parents were. I know that there were several different spellings of the surname and it probably derived originally from 'Monsieur'. Can anyone help?

Ruth - seems these folks have sorted you out pretty well! If there's anything else you need, I may be able to help as I live in Hull and spend some time researching in the LDS family history centre - they MAY have relevant registers on film. Please let me know if there's anything specific you think I might be able to help you with. Best wishes

Last name: Mouncher This rare surname has two possible origins, both French. It may be locational and derive from the pre 10th Century "moncel" meaning a hillock, and found in the placenames Monchaux (Seine-Inferieure) and Monceaux (Calvados), or it may be an Anglicization of the title or form of address "Monsieur", used as a late medieval nickname for a Frenchman. The latter form is also found in the surnames Monsur, Muncher, Mounser, Mancher and Menser, and the dating of the early recordings is the Huguenot period, from approximately 1540 to 1760. The earliest recording in any spelling form is probably that of Agnes Mounser, who married one William Corkar at St. Stephen's Church, Coleman Street, London, on June 19th 1558. The name is also recorded as Mounseire (1684); Monsieur (1688), and Mouncher (1712), see below, whilst Mancher is found later, in 1770. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Anne Mouncher, which was dated February 24th 1712, marriage to Thomas Yard, at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, during the reign of Queen Anne, known as "The Last Stuart Monarch", 1702 - 1714. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to "develop" often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

I've just had a look on Ancestry to see if I could find when your John and Amelia died and note that someone has a public member tree which states that John's parents were John senior and Rebecca Stringer. Unfortunately, there is nothing to say where this information came from and there are a LOT of errors on the Ancestry trees but you might like to bear these folks in mind.
The Mormons have a lot of stuff which has not found its way onto their website, so if they have the films in stock, I hope to be able to find some odds and ends for you when I go. Best wishes

Ruth, If you go to the website www.archive.org and tap Howden registers into the search box, you will find digitised transcripts of the parish registers to about 1770. There's quite a few Mounseys/Mounsers etc.
I'll try and get you back to the time at which the transcripts end.
Best wishes
