I have just stumbled across this correspondence relating to the Desborough family in Cambridgeshire. Does anyone please have any records or connections relating to a Mary Desborough (or Disbrow) who married Robert Stevens in Stow-cum-Quy by licence on 5th January 1785? This was Robert's second marriage and he came fro Bottisham. Thanks.

Marjorie,
There are some more to come from Whittlesey, sorry, I don't have the Wisbech PRs but they are available from Cambs Family History Society. Unfortunately, they do charge quite a bit for them...more than any other FHS I've prurchased from :-(
Best wishes

From googling round I came across a posting of yours, not sure if link below will work!.

Found the 1875 Marriage, now on Yorks. Ance***y collection. So father of Willie, was Thomas James Desborough born 1850 Holbeach, Lincs.
1881 DESBOROUGH, Thomas J Head Married M 30 1851 Drayman St Ives Lincolnshire DESBOROUGH, Mary Jane Wife Married F 28 1853 Garforth Yorkshire DESBOROUGH, Eliza A Daughter Single F 4 1877 Leeds Yorkshire DESBOROUGH, John T Son Single M 3 1878 Leeds Yorkshire DESBOROUGH, James A Son Single M 0 1881 New Wortley Yorkshire RG number: RG11 Piece: 4504 Folio: 163 Page: 49 Registration District: Bramley Sub District: Wortley Enumeration District: Ecclesiastical Parish: Civil Parish: Wortley Municipal Borough: Address: 16, Pickards Bldgs, Wortley County: Yorkshire (West riding) (I don't think that should be St Ives!, wondering about a Sutton, St James, Lincs. not sure)
He needs to be found from 1851 onwards, his Marriage 1875 just gives his father as Thomas, Labourer...
(do you have his 1850 Birth Cert.?)
Births Sep 1850 (>99%) Desborough Thomas James Holbeach 14 446
Quite a few of these Desboroughs about, not making things easy lol...

Ok Chris
Here we go I have got a copy of Willie aka William birth certifica he was born on 25/11/1888 to James Thomas Desborough and Mary Jane Thorpe at 33 Holdforth Street New Worthy
I have a copy of his marrige to Mary Selina Bygraves, on this he is down as William this was in 1910 and it has his father down as deseased
I have a copy of Thomas James Desborough and Mary Jane Thorpe in 1875 on this copy it gives Thomas father as Thomas as well But Thomas went by James for some reason, I know this is right as as my Mum remeber that her Mary Jane Thorpe married twice after Grandad James died, and i have followed it through via family etc
I am not sure if you have the right James though please let me know

I think the Huntingdon Desborough family is a different one from the Whittlesea one.

Hoping some of this helps Marjorie get sorted a bit, with so much of the Huntingdon family on google, it is confusing!.

Just had a look at the IGI for the birth of an Edward Desborough around 1740 and came up with one baptised in Nassington, Northamptonshire, 10 May 1733, to Edward and Anne. You might like to keep him in your shoebox.
This area is quite difficult as there are several county boundaries all converging around Peterborough and given our ancestors' roving natures, they could be anywhere. Certainly one of mine went from Kings Cliffe (near Nassington) to Whittlesey. The good news is that Northamptonshire is quite well-covered on the very excellent freereg site!

Hello Marjorie William Desborough, son of Edward & Sarah baptised St Mary's, Whittlesey 22 May 1769. He married Rebeccah Baker 27 Aug 1788
Edward Desborough married Sarah Hodgson in St Mary's 3 Oct 1763
They also had the following children:
John Desborough bapt 7 Jan 1766; buried 27 Mar 1771
Hannah Desborough bapt 29 Apr 1767; buried 30 Mar 1771
Hannah Desburg bapt 30 Mar 1778 (says in the register child of Edward & Elizabeth but gives mother's name as Sarah in the BTs!)
Sarah Desbury bapt 12 Oct 1783
Edward Desberry buried 7 Mar 1796
Sarah Desbura, widow, buried 12 Dec 1800
There is absolutely no mention of a Laurence in the registers for Whittlesey St Mary or St Andrew and there is little mention of the family at all before Edward and Susan - some children born in the 1710s and 1720s but most seem to have died in infancy.
I have the complete PRs for Whittlesey on CD, so if you need William's children looking up, please let me know. Pity I wasn't aware of this one last week, as I was in Cambridge, Huntingdon and Peterborough Archives and might have been able to assist. You could try asking on here if anyone has the Huntingdonshire and Cambridgeshire marriage indexes (there are also baptism and burial indexes for Cambridgeshire) - might help you to pinpoint where they moved to and from. :-)
Best wishes
Kim in Hull
