Anne of Green Gables - how exciting these look like they are the right people, I knew there was a very distant link to Lord Lovat and he appears here, now all I need to find the link after Alexander. I suppose the title would have gone down the generations to the one that my great granny talked of. :D

Diane, if you go back kind of to the beginning, Dee asked what Alexander's occupation was on his marriage certificate. Since occupations are shown in the Scottish censuses at Ancestry, that info can help find a person.

Also an address or exact location if there was one.

I pointed out what a hash Ancestry has made of census transcriptions in 1881 in at least that one part of Scotland. I wonder whether you have tried searching for the household in the censuses at scotlandspeople instead?

As well, Ann o' GG hasn't identified her sources for all of that stuff, but I suspect it is material that someone has submitted to the Mormons, and it probably shouldn't be relied on without some more "official" confirmations.

I will have another try - I went to the family history centre in Inverness who hold all the Information for the highlands and they couldn't find them on any of the census'. i have a lot of work to do now so will have a go on scotlands people. Ann o' GG info is very interesting but will probably be focusing on the more recent members of my family.

The counties of Ross & of Cromarty were combined in 1889. Cromarty wasn't much of a county, being 10% of the combination, and consisting of half a dozen parishes scattered about. You will see folk distinguishing the counties in their pob on censuses. Counties in 19th cent Scotland didn't do very much, and their were lots of anomalous detached bits, and cross-border parishes. (My dad had 2 uncles born in different counties, but the same parish.) ROC at 2M acres was the 4th largest UK county, and with 33 parishes, the average parish was 60000 acres (abt the size of a largish Ontario Twp for Janey).

Gairloch is on the W coast, abt 90km from Urquhart & Logie Wester which is on the E coast, across the Cromarty Firth from Dingwall. Killearnan is the adjacent parish to the SE of U & LW.
