JaneyCanuck Report 19 Apr 2011 19:16

Thank you Ann! I think I'd run into that once. ;)

Still no reply from Paul as to the 1851 census details. Sometimes it's just pointless.

Paul Report 19 Apr 2011 19:28

I have actually reseached alice redman, have marriage certificate hanging around somewhere,i do know the parish.
The frederick and ann redman in soton are the right ones, perhaps my memory is playing tricks or st marys is possibly a subdivision to which all saints belongs.
Thanks you for the info,janeychuck

Paul

You are in great hands with Ann and JC, but you do need to be clear, accurate and concise on the information you provide.

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Apr 2011 21:53

No, Simon, you're really not quite so ...

Paul, I couldn't care less what you have "hanging around somewhere".

If you want OTHER PEOPLE -- you know, other human beings with lives who pay to use this website -- to help you when you ask for help, it's your responsibility to provide the information you have. Accurate, complete information.

You seem to have no desire to do that, so I'll be getting off the train here.

Paul

Paul Report 19 Apr 2011 21:59

thanks simon.
i seem to have made a pigs ear of this, perhaps i should provide more details first

This was my thread

Perhaps you should take notice of Janey.

Get all the information you have and state clearly what you require.

Probably best delete this thread and start again.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Apr 2011 22:26

Absolutely not.

Delete this thread and start another and I promise I will report it as a duplicate!

Simon, shame.

JC,

I was winding you up and you took the bait!

Have a good evening.

Paul, ignore me just take notice of the GR supersleuths nay clairvoyants.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Apr 2011 22:34

I did, I realized as soon as I clicked. But not fair to poor bystanders to goad them -- they probably take you seriously!

I got to say "shame" to you again though, didn't I?

Oh, and if you get to bore people with your thread, so do I.

LOL

I will take a look, I find your threads absolutely riveting but I do lead a very sheltered life.

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 19 Apr 2011 23:20

Same old thread as the other time, Simon -- that one was for Paul. Actually it's an example of how not to start out -- I'd started it specifically because our Lew had offered to look for particular info, which is why it starts in the middle and goes in every direction from there. ;)

I don't have a lot of my own threads here, I fear! Not of the TTF kind, anyhow.

Paul, anytime you do want to just post some names, dates and places, go ahead, we'll always look. Heck, maybe Simon would even take a shot!

Simon

Simon Report 19 Apr 2011 23:38

I think Paul has been scared off to Rootschat!

Paul Report 20 Apr 2011 00:01

You know i was saying that richard bateman was an custom man, perhaps that should be excise man(i can't give iyou a source, although i do remember once discussing with a professional about this).
In the gentlemen's magazine, its mentions a richard bateman, excise man who died in ipswich 1819,leaving wife and 4 children.
above richard bateman not to be confused with one who died in 1733 or the ones living in 1630s-166os who also have excise connections.

Oh Paul, don't grasp at straws, you'll drown!

If we went only by names, I would have been right when I thought for 10 seconds that my gr-grfather's sister's husband was an Admiral who tried to save the Lusitania! But no, he was just a once-wealthy bankrupt gambler whose surname wasn't even Coke in his ancestors' day, and he quickly changed to McCock then, allegedly in their honour, but really to escape creditors, if you ask me. ;)

There likely weren't hundreds of Richard Batemans around in the early 1800s, but I'm sure there was more than one. There were a good couple of dozen in the 1841 census, and that's not counting any who died in the 30 or 40 preceding years.

You start with what you know ... and work from there. Never grab a straw just because it's the only one you've found.

Oh, and if it was a "professional" who put you on to that one ... I hope it was cheap. It was a "professional" who told my mum's cousin that her grandfather Ernest Augustus Monck (that big thread) might have been from Ireland ... or Cornwall ... or Germany. It was me who found out that he actually was from Cornwall, as his 1901 census entry says -- it's just that his name was actually Ernest Augustus Hill ...

Ipswich doesn't seem to be connected with your Batemans, does it?

For real Simon?? Because if there are parallel searches going on, that's another station where I get off the train. ;)
