i know this is a current site as Kit and I have many ancestors in common.

I wonder if any of the armed forces would have records?

that is the book ann and as bourton on the hill is part of moreton in the marsh they may well have come across him. a copy is in the gloucester archives.

perhaps he wasn't born Sprules - I keep being drawn to this chap - I can't find him on any census and I can't see a marriage or death for him -

just something to throw into the pot -

I have not the slightest idea whether any of these people are related to Cyril Sprules, but it seemed logical if we are considering Elsie to trace that family back and identify all its members who could be a parent of Cyril for example.

I don't have a problem LadyKira apart from thinking as many people do that seemingly random records posted in threads are as likely to confuse and mislead posters looking for help as not, that is my sole reason for asking about such seemingly random records.

Thank you all for your suggestions but I fear none of them help. The name on the memorial is quite definitely Cyril B C Sprules. Before this I tried the CWGC website with no luck. I have tried Glousestershire sites with no response which is where I had hoped someone with liocal knowledge would help

Just popping in here as i was looking at this earlier before i had to go out.
Cyril Blackwell C Beck ended up as Cyril Cutler. His mother I think was Jane Beck and she married John Blackwell Cutler in 1889. I also looked at another Cyril CB who was in Moreton on the Marsh.......I can't bring his surname to mind but i think it began with W. He appears to have been a bank clerk and had a daughter in 1917. There is no service record for him and I couldn't find a link to the name Sprules.
EDIT: WADLEY was his name.

problem is we do not have any other record so no date of birth
no place of birth
no definite first name
very few sprules connected with bourton on the hill

doubt about his surname.
nothing conrete enough for a wildcard search

i really think the best way to go is via victor at the archives

Yes Anthea I think we all understood that, else what were we doing here.

The fact that a person used a name does not mean that the name they used was their name, and when no record can be found of a name that a person used, experienced searchers will consider the possibility that the person was using a name other than their own name.

this happens when children of unmarried parents adopt their stepfather's (or biological father's) surname, just as one example.

I've just looked at a picture of the memorial on the net. He is definitely listed but only as Cyril Sprules on the image shown. So where does the BC come from??

there must be some info somewhere of when the memorial was erected, by whom and details of the people listed on it - they weren't just plucked out of the air. Is there a local history society ?

idle thoughts are about all I have left. It says on the memorial 'In memory of the men of this village who died in two world wars'

Six listed for WW1 and 1 for WW11.

I can't find a cyril born there.

i can't find a Cyril living there on any census.

So maybe he changed his name as you said earlier.
I think it is a case for the Village historians.

Oh my, once again ......... Chris, you have just reposted everything Andy posted on page 1 _ruling out_ that CH Sprules ......... as I already said on this page when LadyKira posted that WWI death _again_

.......... so that makes three times suggested, three times ruled out now ............

.......... no, four, if it was already ruled out in a 2009 thread about the exact same thing .........

As far as the suggestion now made a couple of times that some branch of the military must have records

........ several of us have looked at the CWGC site where all war casualties (militayr and civilian) are recorded

........ I am sure I am not the only one who has searched military records at Ancestry

but as we all do know large numbers of WW one records were destroyed during WW two and so there is no 'must' about it at all, if there ever was a military record of a person by this name it could well be among the records lost forever during the second war
