There is an Ellen Campbell aged 40 on the 1901 census in Birmingham but I dont have a sub to see the full record.

There is also a John H Campbell on the 1901 in Brum but again you will need someone with full access to check out these households and see if there is any relationship.

After doing a bit of enquiry, i have since learnt that Lawrence was a bit of a 'rover' meaning he was a traveller, so i reckon he may of been out of the country when the 1901, 1911 censuses were done.
I have been told they were brothers.
Anyway, i will keep on trying - maybe the details which you have given me about Hugh Campbell are connected to him in some way.

Can I just suggest that if John's father's name was Hugh there is quite a stong possibility that they were originally Irish Campbells rather that Scottish?

Diane

Diane Report 11 Jan 2011 10:50

Yes, it certainly looks that way, as i can't find any connection between them & Scotland.

Hi. Since my last post, the home where John Campbell resided has given me more details:
John Campbell born 20 Dec 1889
Admitted toSt.Pauls Home for Boys, Coleshill 2 Dec 1898
from Birmingham Workhouse via Birmingham Guardians
Reason for admission: desertion by father
Baptised at. Catherines, Birmingham 5 Jan 1890
Confirmation 24 May 1899
Discharged from St.Pauls to St.Vincents Home for Working Boys on 19 Dec 1903
Discharged from St.Vincents on 15 Aug 1905.
I have been in contact with Birmingham Register 0ffice, & they have no John Campbell on the register.
Do you know if the the Workhouse would have details of his birth (certificate)?
Could i find out from the electoral roll where he was living between 1905 &1911?
Thank you...

I doubt that he would have been entitled to vote, and even if he was, old ER's are searched by address only

I would think a baptism would be the best way to go - you have the date and church from the Boys Home details. St Catherine's Birmingham does seem to have a website but only a blank page is coming up:
