Jean,I'm not that familiar with the London areas.Should have thought your John Webb ,would in 1861 be in the area he was married in ,or near.

Hi Ellen,
Can't have a shoemaker as our father and son were illiterate and had no skills so either worked in the iron foundry or as dock labourers.

As for your suggestion that John would be in the same area as he was married in - that is what I have based my whole search on. The area covered is like a triangle and most families live in the next street to each other or at the very least don't move out of the area.

Hi,

I have also looked at several marriages in Stepney and I too have the witness as Ithiel Paice!!! I wonder if this was someone that used to 'stand in' when someone didn't turn up or the people getting married only had one witness???
