Marie Report 27 May 2010 21:57

a while ago i got stuck on trying to find sarah jane pleasant. I am now retrying. I have now found whom i think is her mother SARAH PLEASANT and father GEORGE PLEASANT and also their children (all born in Crowle) in the 1871 census. I have Sarah Janes birth certificate, which states that her mother was called sarah pleasant formerly THORP and that sarah jane was born in Crowle, so i think ive got the right family. MY PROBLEM NOW IS ive searched for the siblings births and i cant find any of them. The census shows that charles was born 1855, annie elizabeth 1859, Emily 1864. Sarah was born 1831 and George 1821. Can anyone please help

So if Sarah (mother) was formerly Thorp can we assume that this was her second marriage? Perhaps she was born Ellis?

Marie

Marie Report 27 May 2010 22:11

i dont quite understand all of this, does this mean that their birth name is pheasant and not pleasant

Marie, what does that last posting ("not yet") mean please?

TheLadyInRed

TheLadyInRed Report 27 May 2010 22:15

No Marie, it means that the name has probably been mis-transcribed from the handwritten census records. Volunteers read the sheets and input what they think it says to the electronic versions that we have access to.
It's very easy to look at something hand written and read it differently. One of the joys of family research I'm afraid!

However as Pheasant crops up more times than Pleasant, I'd say the former was the original name.

There are so many cases of Pheasant for this family, and FreeBMD has fewer mistranscriptions because the names are in alphabetical order, that I wonder whether Pheasant is not the real name. Marie can you say where the name Pleasant is taken from?

Marie I can't find any previous threads about this person, I wanted to see what research had been done before that you refer to, have you had other threads and deleted them?
