I think there is a good possibility Cass, what do you think?
That is the only record I can find for Dorothy Patrick anywhere at the moment..

And Mary Jane has gone somewhere in 1911,but not on the census that I can find, can you?

Paul

Paul Report 21 Mar 2010 22:52

Forgive my ignorance, ladies, are you saying Mary Jane and Dorothy could be the same person?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 21 Mar 2010 22:53

Yes..
I am decidedly leaning that way with also trying to stack up the evidence to prove it..

Cassies (LB) verdict I still await...

LiverBird1 Report 21 Mar 2010 22:56

Yeah FBG I don't see anything that could be Dorothy in 1901, and I can't for the life of me find Mary /Jane Patrick in 1911, I think you could be right, well done!

Wonder why the change of name??

Paul

Paul Report 21 Mar 2010 22:57

At this point may I just say then, that I have recently come into contact with my dad's half sister (whom I found through this site) and she states catagorically that at no time did she ever hear her father (William Usher) call her mother (Mary Jane) mary.... he always called her "Dot". I found that confusing as I none of my certificates state "Mary Jane Dorothy".... just Mary Jane!!

LiverBird1

LiverBird1 Report 21 Mar 2010 23:00

Maybe she was legally Mary Jane but was known as Dorothy maybe she just prefered that name??

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 21 Mar 2010 23:02

So wild theory time now...

Mary Jane goes off to be servant in London, decides to take a more "modern"forename.
Gets pregant somewhere between London and Worcs to someone called William Henry Preece?
Regs the birth of her baby to Dorothy Patrick and uses dads surname as her maiden namae??

Then later decides to change back to Mary Jane Patrick and "adopt"her own son..
All tidy and respectable like to the neighbours then??

Paul

Paul Report 21 Mar 2010 23:02

But would she be allowed to do that on a legal document??? Where my Dad's mother is named as Dorothy Patrick??

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 21 Mar 2010 23:04

And you say Paul......

At this point may I just say then, that I have recently come into contact with my dad's half sister (whom I found through this site) and she states catagorically that at no time did she ever hear her father (William Usher) call her mother (Mary Jane) mary.... he always called her "Dot".

WHOOPEEEEE

My mad wild theory is prob nearer than I thought then......

Legal docs...
Who is to know ?Its done all the time.
You can call yourself anything you like as long as it is not for fraudulent means...

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 21 Mar 2010 23:09

I changed my first name at 12 yrs old,it is on every thing.passport,Drivers license(never can spell that)Marriage, kids birth certs...

I was known as mrs E... for yrs but was never married to Mr E....

I am now known as my maiden name ,not my married name..
Its not illegal as long as I dont do it to swindle peeps..!

Edit.
I am now convinced that your father was the child of the woman he called Mum and that Mary Jane and Dorothy ARE the same person..!
Also Mary Jane didnt marry until 1936?
Where was your father from his birth until then.?
An unmarried woman that young is unlikely to take on anothers child I would have thought?

You are welcome Paul...
It was nice to work with someone that hung around to answer questions and add their thoughts..
So many dont sadly...

But wait until they start searching for my 3,yes 3 marriages....
Ha,they will have fun there as I have left no docs for them...!
I am not married to any of the xxxs now

Nite Cassie~~~~

Paul Report 21 Mar 2010 23:25

I don't know where dad was from his birth in 1922 to 1936. Although in his later years he signed a statutory declaration document where he states... "the persons whom I understood to be my parents were known to me as William Henry Usher and Mary Jane Usher. The said William Henry Usher and Mary Jane Usher raised me as a child and I knew no other persons as my parents".

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 21 Mar 2010 23:31

Well I do think Mary Jane / Dorothy was his mother...

So I wonder if William Henry Usher was his father?

Was he a bachelor on his marriage?

Was he married "elsewhere" and couldnt be seen to be your dads father until later so they cooked up his birth cert between them?

Your dad does have the same names,,very coincidental that....

Paul

Paul Report 21 Mar 2010 23:36

Yes, William Henry Usher was a batchelor of 44 years of age and Mary Jane was a spinster of 45 years of age. registered at separate addresses 24th December 1936.

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 21 Mar 2010 23:42

So him being married elsewhere before goes out the window than...
Did they look alike...the 2 Williams?

Fathers name and occupation?

I will see if I can find him in 1911 if you like..

Paul

Paul Report 21 Mar 2010 23:44

William Henry Usher's father was ALSO William Usher... a stone quarryman.
