Something we have in common then. When I lived in Kent with a couple of children and a mortgage to support when the OH came home one night a week I worked on the Tote at Crayford, and also on the Saturday. Quite enjoyed that as a break from the four walls. Didn't enjoy the night when one of the dogs somersaulted, broke its neck and had to be put down though.

Have only been once lately - if you can call about 5 years ago lately - and that was to the Portsmouth one. Right come down from London tracks I must say. It has closed this year.

My girl Melody (before she raced at Portsmouth) - raced at Wimbledon. Best bred one I've had. Three quarters Australian, one part Irish, and came first or second in 12 of her 36 races. Quite proud of her. Wish I could have seen her race.

Dont now the New Cross one but I worked at the Hackney one for about a week in the early 80s,in the kitchen,hated it.
My grandad took me to White City when I was about 5, way back when.

But I used to go often to Walthamstow and Wembley in the late eighties and early 90s..

No I didn't know about the destruction of records during WWII. However, from my notes think the Newington Butts one enlisted in New Cross which makes it highly likely as a joining up point for anyone living in that area.

Paid many a visit to the Greyhound Racing Track at New Cross with my dad when I was a teenager. Never would have thought then that in my sixties and seventies I would give a home to four ex-racers.

It may if you can find it on Ancesrtry Jean,but you did know that only about 25% of WW1 records survived the Blitz of WW2 dont you?.

If it survived and he wasnt an Officer then it should be on there.

The Medal cards only give what medals were won and the rank,so it would have to be service records to stand a chance.

Also he may have been in any regiment,it depends where he was assigned to.
For example If he enlisted in Surrey it does not always follow that he would be in a Surrey Reg...

Could anyone advise whether if I get service record against above number would it show parents? where he was living? His age is unknown.

I've hunted down my old notes that I made last year and I can see that I found a William Groombridge with residence of Newington Butts (cannot say where I found it though). Have looked at my London A-Z and that is very close to Crosslett St. where the family were living on 1911 census (both places still there despite the bombing).

Will have another look at War Graves Commission site although I think I came up blank on that.

Thank you both so much! Not the first naughty boy in the family I've discovered. Still wondering if he went into the services. I'll keep my fingers crossed he reformed and 'did his bit' for his country.

i found this one for 1911, but it does not answer anything, plus i am not too good at London area districts etc, so whether or not Walworth covers where he was born i know not.

He is listed on 1901 census with his family living at 7 Wagner Street, St. Pauls Deptford. Have recently received from a distant relative a copy of the 1911 census (address 12 Wellington House, Crosslett St?) but on that he is missing from the list. Haven't been able to find a death for him between those two dates.

My sister and I think he is the family member who died in WWI who was known in the family as Billy. Have searched for a War record for him without success.

Knowing what excellent researchers we have on this site would like any further information you can find. Could it be that in 1911 he was already in the services? He would have been 15/16 at that time.

I can see the remarriage for E F Mead to A J Sumner..... I can't see a death for her though.

Her baptism gives a DOB of 21st July 1902
