Find Ancestors

Instead of just deleting the info why don't you edit it to read "Deleting this info as irrelevant"or whatever? Then everyone else knows what happened.

I just had a message that said "and you are?"

I've just had one of the amusing talking-behind-your-back-in-public ones.

Do a search of TTF (the search function is back! two months after I first complained) for the word "overseas" and check the top result (other than this thread now ;) ).

I would probably beg to differ with you about 'who cares?' Janey.

Sometimes I do wonder about people but, despite the fact that that particular member drove me to the point of hair pulling out despair, I managed to maintain a polite and, hopefully, helpful conversation with her. She was totally off the beaten track as far as using the boards was concerned and had her own misguided views on the site workings which she was loathe to change.

However, I was sorry when she said she wouldn't be using the boards any more because she obviously needed some information to help her in her research and there are such helpful people on here who could have assisted her.

Her loss, I know......but neither you nor I will ever know what was going on in her life to make her react in the way that she did. I hope she finds what she is looking for.

I had someone who I sent probably 50 - 60 e-mails to over a few days, trying to help.

She would NOT be moved on her beliefs, even though I found proof that she had followed the wrong grandparents back to the 1700's.

It is sad but I SO wanted her to listen to what I was saying - I wish her luck also but I fear that all the info she has is wrong.

I KNOW she will not listen so I now avoid all the threads she posts. This is a shame because I know where she should be going!

I find that, on the whole, most people you help on here are greatful. However, I do laugh to myself when I've given someone some relevant info and they pm me a couple of days later saying "thanks for that"

I used to try and remember what the hell I'd done for them but now I can't be bothered. I am so tempted to leave it a couple of days and pm them with something like "no probs"

I had a pm a few weeks ago which said - "You are right - she did marry John. Thank you SO much - What a great find "!!

I tried to find the connection but couldn't so sent a pm asking what it was I had found and it turned out that I had replied on a thread almost 18 months ago !!

Anyway, at least she was pleased!

When I send folk a message about replies being on threads, I have usually given them about 24 hours to reply, so I guess that could be the reason for some of the delays. Have thought of sending the messages sooner but don't want to hassle anyone in case they have probs.

Some have asked about deleting their threads after information has been found for them. I usually tell them that it really isn't necessary as it isn't taking up any room on their computer and, who knows, the information may be useful to someone else.

Can't be held responsible for those who delete without warning though! (I did it myself at first through sheer ignorance of site workings - so can't say much can I??) lol. Cx.

Some of us forget what it was like to be new on this site - I try my very best to remember when I reply to people, especially those who appear to be 'new-ish' !

'Newbies' on here need help from people like you!

Yes indeed, a big thankyou to our Cynthia who is unflagging in her duty to chase up the thankless.
It certainly is reassuring to find thankyou messages from those you have helped in the past.
I must admit that my OH does tend to raise an eyebrow when I receive e-mails stating I have a message from some woman when I have not been online for a few days............I just tell her it's that Cynthia again!

LOL! Just had one deleted on me about 2 minutes ago. (I think it may have been an error on her part,though. Just one of those oops moments.)

I was helping on one earlier and was trying to post a bit of info on the baptism of the eldest child and "oops ..." came up. But, as you say, their loss.

Considering she was a Crump as well and put Neville born 1882-1997 and made him 115! when he died when he was born Dec 1910 I couldnt fathom it myself either really.
Especially as there is so much on him if you google.
Mind you I couldnt find him on 1911,so he may have gone to Oz,to his fathers ranch.

Trying to put myself in the position of the 'deleter' ......... I know that some will be bad manners/selfishness but it could also be a case of.......great, got that......don't need it any more, click delete...........couldn't it? So I would probably call that 'thoughtlessness' which is verging on selfishness and oops, almost come full circle :)

I've read this thread all the way through and would just like to add this *insight* maybe?

When I posted my very first TTF thread I received help and information and was very grateful for it too. BUT, having got the info I did delete my thread, thinking that no-one else would be interested in it but me anyway.

It wasn't until later (when I started reading the boards on a regular basis) that this subject was raised and the long standing members were all saying the same thing......that it is better to leave the thread as it may be helpful to someone else in the future. It just hadn't really occurred to me, but of course then I saw the sense of leaving it! It's not taking up space on my computer and someone else may find something of relevance to their searching.

p.s. And, in my ignorance back then, I made the mistake of posting the same request on both Records and TTF board - but I was told very nicely that the helpers read all the boards so only need to post on one. :-))))

This is another possible way for accidental deletions.

About deleted threads - I often do a board search (the search function now being back on line) about threads I'm working on. And there really have been times I've run into another member of a family who had posted, unfortunately usually long ago, about the same person -- and have directed the current poster to the other thread.

Keep in mind all the people who turn up (usually late at night for some reason!), dreddging up threads from 2003 and replying, some of whom actually do share ancestors with the original poster.

If everybody deleted their threads when they were "done" with them, the "surname boards", where newbies go (because that's where the management's emails send them) to look for people with rellies in common, would be empty!

That really was the way the site was originally envisioned - as a collection of "surname boards" where people with the same surname could post looking for others with that surname. Since it wasn't even possible to reply in threads for several years, obviously it wasn't envisioned that anyone would post and then delete. ;)

Well, two threads that very much needed to be deleted just did get!

We'll never know whether either one thought better of their behaviour (or decided they didn't want to be held accountable for it) or management did the thinking for them - although my understanding was that it was the latter in both cases. ;)
