I have had 3 threads deleted on me today.
I have started working on each of them and have spent several hours searching!
It makes me VERY cross as this time has now been wasted.
Could I please ask people NOT to delete their threads
We are here trying to help - let us help you and not waste our time and effort.

Hi Dea,
I am sure your research has not been wasted as the recipients will have stripped all of the required information before removing it . They may even have expressed their gratitude.
People delete their own threads for several reasons.
Lack of knowledge of GR rules and practices............... They may simply feel they are taking up space while being unaware that keeping threads open is allowed.
To tidy up their own details........... Some people get really worried when they have several threads in their history, making a concerted effort to remove them all.
To prevent " embarassing " details remaining on view............. Many helpful posts do throw up illegitimacy, lies about ages, previous marriages but all are part of this type of research and if you are squeamish about that kind of thing, should you then risk it all coming out in the wash !
To erase perceived errors........................... Some posters seek answers while having their own preconceived ideas as to the validity of the replies, regardless of how well researched that information may be.
To hide heated discussions................ An appology usually works best for me.
The problem with posters deleting their threads, aside from appearing to negate all the hard work carried out by those who offer their assistance and time freely, occurs when they lose the supplied information only to realise that thread no longer exists....................DOHH
If left on the boards, any supplied data would also be available to all other GR members who may well find it useful in their own research.
Chin up, there's always someone else looking for assistance !

I don't care what their "reason" is - but the usual one is to eliminate the evidence of rule-breaking duplicate threads.
I sometimes marvel that some people find their way here at all, they seem to be so ignorant of computers/the internet.
The threads in one's "My threads" or "Bookmarks" are NOT on one's computer. They are on the server of this website owner. They do not take up space anywhere other than that. The number of people who seem to think this - that deleting their threads here (or their posts in other people's threads) is somehow good for their computers - astounds me.
It also rather amazes me that people who are (or claim to be) ignorant of computers or the internet manage to figure out how to delete entire threads ... or series of threads ...
... as happened in one instance yesterday where I noted the series of threads over a period of time, in a post in the most recent thread - boom, suddenly they were *all* gone. The explanation I got by email - clever me, I still had the tabs with the search results and the threads open so I could send a PM expressing my thoughts - was that it was all very sensitive so had been deleted. Yessss, that explained why it had all been sitting on the board for months ... Not.
If it happens while you're in mid-post, use your back button to backtrack and you might be able to get to the previous version of the page, and right-click on the person's name, open the PM form in a new tab, and politely enquire what the problem seems to be.
Dollars to doughnuts it will be "oh dear, I accidentally deleted it ...". Yeah, right.

I don't just marvel at the fact that people find their way back here Janey, I just marvel at people sometimes!
Yesterday I carried on the most ludicrous conversations with this person - I had simply sent her my usual message about how to go back to her thread and look at her replies. To begin with, I received this:
I do not understand your message. I have received e-mails from MS and each time have sent a reply. I have no messages to which I have not responded. What is your problem
I explained that 2 members had posted replies on her thread.
Cynthia I have just checked my in-box and If you look there, you will see that there are no messages from any "*****" and I have not received any communications ever from anyone called "*******". I have never received the messages which you have referred to . I suggest your system is in error. I have never heard of "volunteers" and I believe that MS is just a helpful fellow member of G.R. and has nothing to do with "volunteers". Clearly something has gone wrong with your system if you can see messages in my in-box which I can't. This is very worrying as I presumed they were confidential
I reassured her that I could not see into her inbox and I copied and pasted the replies for her.
The next message:
Cynthia, The message board system has changed markedly since I last used it quite a few years ago, and become unnecessarily complicated,.
I expected replies from other members, which was what I got in my inbox and I received notification about those replies via my internet in-box. I therefore did not realise that I also had to go back to the Community section. Why be so complicated? I don't even know what "threads" are! Anyway, we are all familiar with the usual bmd type sites - your volunteers are wasting their time recommending them. I have "answered" the community type inputs, but won't bother with the system again, it's caused me too much annoyance.
This is but a percentage of the correspondence. I could have written a sketch on it to be honest but it left me fair worn out I can tell you!

ANYBODY with any nouse just has to look at previous postings on any of the boards to see how they work.

Meant to say how I love this bit: "won't bother with the system again, it's caused me too much annoyance" - so oft heard, the words varying but the message staying the same: I'm taking my ancestors and going home.
Who do they imagine cares??
