Hi Pittsy

Not sure how much you already know. Do you have his wife/children/parents? Here is some stuff from NLA Trove, which you may already have:

In June of 1881 'under medical advice' he went to Europe by steamer. About 150 gents met at Scott's Hotel to farewell him, presenting him a with a gift of a gold locket in the shape of a padlock, the trademark of the firm.

The Inquirer & Commercial News, Wednesday 19 December 1883
Mr. William Rigg. a member of the well known firm of Messes. McLean Bros., Rigg, & Co., has died.

The Argus, Tuesday 18 December 1883
RIGG. —On the 16th inst., at his residence, Netley, Williams-road, Windsor, William Rigg (of Messrs. McLean Bros. and Rigg), aged 46 years. R.I.P.

The Brisbane Courier, Thursday 27 December 1883
Flags wore flying half-mast high over many houses of business in the city on Tuesday last out of respect to the memory of Mr. William Rigg, of the firm of Messrs. M'Lean Bros, and Rigg, ironmongers, who died of consumption on the 16th instant. Mr. Rigg was a well known Melbourne merchant, and was a colonist of thirty years' standing. He was a member
of the Executive Committee of the International Exhibition. He took a warm interest in civic and political affairs. The deceased gentleman was a prominent member of the Roman Catholic Church, and was a willing helper in all its enterprises, particularly in all that pertained to furthering the progress of the Cathedral.

The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, Tuesday 20 May 1884
The late Mr. William Rigg, of Messrs. M'Lean Brothers and Rigg, of Melbourne, has bequeathed £250 to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Melbourne, £50 each to the Magdalen Asylum and Catholic Orphanage. His estate was sworn at £37,000.

The Argus, Wednesday 21 October 1903
RIGG.-On the 18th October, at Beechworth, Margaret Frances Rigg, of Dalbeattie, Williams-road, Windsor, widow of the late William Rigg.
R.I.P. (Interred at Melbourne General Cemetery, October 20.)

He was also buried at Melbourne General Cemetery.

Possible arrival (from NZ)
RIGG WM A[dult] DEC 1863 HERO N 047 008

I haven't used any bdm disks for chn etc but let me know if you need them.

One more bit:

The Argus, Friday 7 September 1951
PROCEEDS from the sale of "Dalbeattie," the 20-roomed mansion home in Williams rd., Windsor, built by Scots pioneer William Rigg in 1896, will go to Xavier College.
The house itself was sold for £12,500; the auction of its contents, which ended yesterday, brought £4,250.
It was at Xavier that the three Rigg boys-William, John, and Charles were educated. They and their two sisters never married, so that Charles' death last year marked the end of the family line.

Alan, I would need to go to the State Library in the city.

You could try sending a message to the library; they may be able to help if you know they exact death date (which I think was on the burial) by looking in old newspapers on microfiche.

The information you gave me is fantastic but nowhere does it tell us his parents name. My Rigg clan all bought a ship and came to Australia and I am trying to work out which one of the brothers he belonged to. Any suggestions. I have contacted the Melbourne Cemetery for more information on his grave 1883 and his wife Margaret nee Cusack 1903. Any suggestions where else I can look. I have checked at Trove for all death notices in 1883 for him but nothing mentions his family or his children which is unusual. If I can locate the dc I will purchase it.

Thanks

Hey Pittsy

This is his death:

Surname: RIGG
Given Names: William
Event: D
Father: Anthy
Mother: Mary ALLAN [or ALLEN]
Age: 46
Death Place: UNKNOWN
Year: 1883
Reg Number: 12225

Let me know if this is a link and I will send chn's names/bdms. Both Wm and Margaret's wills are available to download online ( se 3rd link), they are large files though. http://210.8.122.120/indexes/index_search.asp?searchid=54

Wm had siblings named Charles (b. Scotland, d. 1871 aged 29) and Anthony (b. 'Kirk', d. 1872 aged 39). So all 3 brothers died quite young. He also had a sister named Catherine (b. 'Kirk', d. 1873 aged 53 as McDONALD).

Kirk could be Kirkcudbright, which is in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland - this is the same area that Dalbeattie is found, after which he named his estate. It's a bit of a clue anyway.

Cherilyn Report 11 Jan 2012 05:48

This adds credence to the Galloway connection:

Surname: RIGG
Given Names: Anthony
Event: M
Spouse Surname: FLANIGAN
Spouse Gvn Names: Ellen Marian
Birth Place: GALLOWAY
Year: 1869
Reg Number: 576

The Argus, Friday 29 January 1869
RIGG-FLANNIGAN. -On the 27th inst., at St. Patrick's Cathedral, by the Rev. George V. Barry, assisted by the Rev. J. P. O'Sullivan, Anthony Rigg, son of the late Anthony Rigg, of Torrkatrine, Galloway, Scotland, to Ellen Marian, eldest daughter of the late Thomas Flannigan, Esq., Melbourne, and step-daughter of Bernard T. Cooke, Esq., Rostrevor-hall, Essendon.

Sadly his wife died in 1872, aged only 26. Anthony died not long after, in September, at Emerald Hill, aged 39. His funeral notice mentions a brother George. Buried at Melbourne General Cemetery.

This is brilliant. With the purchase of his dc and mc yesterday on line I have confirmed parents etc. I also downloaded his will thanks to Helen's assistance. Did not have success with his wife's will yet but will try again. I did find him and his family in 1851 Census living at Torrcatune Urr which is similar to the name of the place he is born on his bc's - spelling different. Census lists his father Anthony as born 1791 Farmer (Kirkcudbrightshire) and he has died by 1851 as his wife Mary (B 1801 England) is listed as a widower living with daughter Agnes. William is at home and born 1837. There are 11 children.

I need to be able to find out who Anthony's parents were - do you have any suggestions ? I found their marriage at familysearch 25/1/1817 and in the same batch I found a JOHN RIGG married to a Janet Irvine 30/6/1815 so there has to be a link here I think.

Thanks for your help again.

Are you able to send me the births for William Rigg's siblings that you know of and their source. Would be a great help. Still getting there - the mortar in the brick wall is weakening I hope.

Cherilyn Report 12 Jan 2012 08:36

Hi Pittsy, if you mean Wm snr's siblings I only have the deaths, which I have given you. You can work out approx birth year from their age at death. All were born in Scotland, not stuff I have access to.

:-)

Glad this is the right family though, not much help to you for births before 1700 - IGI would be my only suggestion.

Thanks for the deaths. I will work back from them. I cannot find William's brother Charles who committed suicide in 1871 or Catherine with the family in the 1851 Census but will keep searching. Charles should have been about 1 year old. Catherine would have been about 20.

I received this from the Melbourne Cemetery.
William Rigg buried on 17/12/1883 age not listed at location Roman Catholic, Compartment E, Grave 125. Also located at this grave is the late Margaret Rigg buried on 20/10/1903 aged 60 and the late William J Rigg buried on 31/10/1935 aged 68.

Thanks for all your help.

Pittsy :-)

Your note

He also had a sister named Catherine (b. 'Kirk', d. 1873 aged 53 as McDONALD).

Did his sister Catherine die in Australia or Scotland ?

Thanks

Hi, thanks for doing this.

My great grandfather Thomas George Knighton moved to Australia in the '50s, and I know that he died in Perth in 2009. In Australia his children were David, Kevin, Neville, Beverley, Vivian and Wendy.

I was wondering if you could find more information on these people, and possibly tell me where their descendants are. I know that Kevin and Neville have lived at least some of their lives in Perth (Kevin actually started one of the first gay clubs in Australia)

Again, thanks.

Pittsy, Catherine died in Victoria. Can't see any marriage or children born to her in Vic though, must have been married when she arrived.

Hi Unknown,

I can only see a marriage for a Cecil KNIGHTON in WA (much earlier of course).

In the White Pages telephone directory online, there are very few KNIGHTONs in WA but none with the initials you have listed. I can't see his wife Betty May, nor her death.

Maybe try contacting Bears Perth to see if they know of Kevin's whereabouts. Possible he has an unlisted phone number but is still living in Perth.

Ah if you do a business White Pages search on Knighton in WA you will find Neville's listing in Greenough, and David's in nearby Deepdale.

Good luck!
