Just back from an emergency shopping trip - ran out of sugar this morning, but found a tin with the camping gear, but then I ran out of ciggies.

LAN-Ann - yeah, dumb of me - I'd seen that marr entry, but just didn't put it together - well absence of ciggies plays tricks with your mind.

Sorry about the dates great grandfather Thomas was 1858 and grandfather Thomas was 1884. I should have put unknown for Joseph's wife Ellen but have since found out it was Morgan. I was just seeing how far I could go back and about any other decendants to add to my family tree.

Where did you 'find out' Ellen's name? On which document(s)?

There is no marriage on freebmd for Ellen Morgan to anyone named Seddon

Do you have feedback concerning all the info which has been posted?

Hi Hilary

before anyone does anymore delving we need to know how you are sure you are following the right line. As I mentioned before there are many many Seddon families in the area and 16 Thomas Seddons born in the Wigan area alone between 1880 & 1890 and 2 of them were born in 1884.

Is any of the information you have been given relevant please?

I took an interest in this thread because I know the area well and know quite a few Seddons too!!

I've pm'd Hilary about returning to the thread and then again to let her know about these new replies. Both have been opened but unfortunately she hasn't replied to either - but I do hope she sees this work.

Hilary does know how to get back here - she has posted since the original.

Hi Freewheel, yes I noticed she had posted a response after I sent the first of my messages. I sent the second one advising that there were more replies last night and telling her of my interest because of the area. Unfortunately ......no reply Hey ho.

Received this PM - guessing it refers to Ellen's 'maiden name'

I found it out through the message board on ancestry.co.uk.

From Hilary

So - no proof.......................

I guess she may be at the beginning of her journey into family history and could be finding it overwhelming. I remember that I didn't even know what a census form looked like when I began and didn't know anything about parish records.

I was a complete numpty.

Now I'm a semi-numpty!!

Hi Hilary

presumably you are sure of your facts from personal knowledge of your grandfather Thomas & grandmother Elizabeth Simms. and when Thomas was born. I am asking because there are 3 John Seddons born in the Wigan area in 1916.

Do you have proof that your grandfather's parents were Thomas Seddon & Ann Darbyshire?

It is very easy to go down the wrong line if you do not have proof yourself and then you have wasted time and probably money if you discover a mistake later. It is better to be certain from the start. Never assume that someone else's research is accurate unless they state in the tree what proof they have.

I have a copy of Thomas Seddon 1884 birth certificate that has Thomas Seddon as father Ann Seddon formerly Darbyshire as his mother. I have also got copies of my father's and his brother's birth certificates that has Thomas Seddon and Elizabeth formerly simm as there father and mother along with copies of death certificates for Thomas and Elizabeth.
