Valerie, it was realy hardly fair of you to post in Jacqueline's lookup thread with this same question, after all this.

Jackie spent time and came up with the birth record that we had already thoroughly investigated and discounted.

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.asp?wci=thread&tk=1188027&px=1

You seem to have posted both at around the same time, but not bothered telling Jackie or the people in this thread that you had two independent efforts going on, neither knowing about the other.

So we wait for the marriage details.

Same time, same place, next week or so?

Cheese, Viv, read the time stamps!

While you two were gossiping away, *I* was scouring the databases, and then composing the post with my wise thoughts. I could have edited it when I saw youse two's last three posts, but I didn't. So there.

I guess we're all off scouring the 1901 and 1911 and FreeBMD for any clue, and finding none.

My basic thought is that she was born to unmarried parents, with one being Vincent and one Thomas, she was registered under one surname (likely her mother's) and she added the other later to add the other parent (likely her father).

In that case her mother could have married after her birth, and Louisa might be found in 1901, e.g., under her mother's husband's surname ... and another option is that her second surname is a stepfather's ...

No evidence for any of it, but a plausible scenario based on experience.

You don't have her marriage certificate, Valerie? As Viv says, that is your essential first step. If she named her father, you absolutely need to know what she said.

Do you have an idea of her family social/occupational class at all?

I do love people with the sense to do that Valerie.
So often people dont or wont get a cert when it is the soooo easy way to find things to go back
Its a pleasure to help someone that helps themselves.

The marriage cert will tell a lot.
If you get it and still need help come back here and we will try again to find her.

I find 2/3 William sheaths on 1911 in southampton area, but no Louisa that I could say was "yours"Valerie ,sorry.

We've ruled out Falmouth, Valerie.

I found that Louisa's marriage.
Viv found her in 1911 with V standing for Valentine.

I'm not finding anyone in 1911 who looks like your Louisa. I should ask: have you?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 23 Nov 2009 18:05

The marriage certificate for her is what you really need.
That will give you her age and her fathers name and occupation ,if she knew it of course.
With that we can find her on 1911 census to try and pin down her birth.

The 1894 birth in Falmouth has been found on 1911 by me and her full name Was louisa grace Valentine Thomas.
Not Vincent.

Valerie!

YOU have all the details. WE have nothing, except what we have been finding for ourselves and prying out of you with a pin!

If you want help finding info about someone, you have got to give the info you HAVE. WE have no way of knowing what you have unless you tell us, and how can we possibly help if we don't know as much as you do to start with??

Viv - it may have moved too fast - I ruled her out by her marriage, bottom of page 1 here.

Valerie

Her death certificate & some sons birth records state her maiden name was Vincent-Thomas

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 23 Nov 2009 17:55

To save time and tears.

Births Dec 1914
SHEATH George E Vincent-Thomas Southampton 2c 57

Births Mar 1916
Sheath Leslie H Vincent-Thomas Southampton 2c 70

Births Mar 1923
Sheath Sydney R Vincent-Thomas Southampton 2c 44

Births Dec 1913
Sheath William J Thomas Southampton 2c 52

Births Dec 1924
Sheath Frank A Thomas Southampton 2c 103

When you said they were "registered under" her maiden name, I had taken that to mean they were registered with her surname as their own, i.e. she was not married.

It's quite posible that her name was given as Louisa Vincent-Thomas or Vincent Thomas on the two births showing as Thomas, and the info got indexed as Thomas alone. Do you have the actual certificates?
