It was not compulsory to register births until 1875 so it simply might not have been registered |

The GRO didn't come into being until the latter part of 1837 - and there was no penalty for not registering a birth until 1875 |

Any child whose birth was registered in AMJ 1862 would be aged 8 (or 9 if the reg'n was late)in 1871 - NOT 10. |
