	Like the other's have said it was not compulsory to register a birth then, but more likley that he was baptised, so try searching the parish records for Chiddingstone, which are held at the Centre for Kentish Studies, Maidstone. If you cannot get to Maidstone, then contact the Kent Family History Society as they may have some one that can do the search for you

	I am really confused now. I cant afford to buy all the birth certs to see which is right or not. I am always confused with censuses, i dont know why, it is really simple i know but for some reason my head never gets the information right. Thankyou for finding all this information for me. Joanne

	GR's pages are not relevant The ONLY page number which matters is the one on the GRO index. In this case, one of the births is on Page 415 - the other is on Page 416 And both are too late to refer to a child whose age on the 1871 census is recorded as 10 years.

	Freewheel, I got John and William on the same page here on Genes reunited in 1862 2a 415 and 2a 416 both in Sevenoaks.

	Any child whose birth was registered in AMJ 1862 would be aged 8 (or 9 if the reg'n was late)in 1871 - NOT 10.
