I have found my great x 3 grandparents in the 1841 census living at Bedford Street with 2 of their children.

Joseph 25
Sarah 20
John 3
James 1year 4 months

my question really is Sarahs maiden name,I have found a Sarah Dayes marrying a Joseph in 1839 right area.When I have viewed peoples treeson here they have her as Sarah Hampson.The only one I can find married in Manchester to a John Shaw and not Joseph.

This is the most probable birth for James going on the 1841 census for him,it will give you his mothers maiden name.

Is it the same family on the 1851 census who have an older daughter Mary Ann born 1831? If so could she be a daughter of Sarah born before she married?

Viv I have a Samuel W who was 8 in the 1861 census but mother Sarah must've died

Hi Margaret Sarah was only born in 1821 so I dont think Mary Ann is hers

Oh it happens more often than I care to admit, Viv.

I have got a couple that seemed to have died during or not long after childbirth.Joseph must've been made of strong stuff because he was 81 when he died and is buried with his daughter in law and great grandchild.

Looking at the enumerators writting on 1861 I am not so sure that should be a W for Samuel.

I would look into that marriage posted by Margaret.

And this is more likely for Samuel going on census age as Joseph seemed to have a good grip on what ages the kids were.
