just ask at the desk in Preston - they will help you through the system of ordering the copy of the will to look at. They are in large bound books in beautiful copperplate - really lovely to see

let us know the outcome. Last time I ordered a will it took abt 3 weeks. It's worth having a full copy but if you want basic info a bit faster (like benficiaries but without writing down all the 'being of sound mind etc') I will see what I can find next time I wander into the Lancs RO

good hunting

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1874
ROYDEN Thomas H SHAW Ellen Toxteth Park, St. Michael

born 1850 according to 1881 census so probably sister. Were Ellen & James the beneficiaries or the executors? If they are named on the probate record as executors it does not mean they were also beneficiaries.

If you do not have a copy of the will - which can be v informative (see Johnsey's tip of the day) they can be obtained from York - just google hmcourtservice for details of how - cost £5. They also hold copies of all wills post 1858 proved at Liverpool in the record office in Preston.

Not sure about will with letters of admin - I think it is if one of the executors had died or is mentally incapable of executing the will.

John Shaw - a copy of the will could not have been issued without it going through the legal system of probate

I went to Liverpool records office yesterday but all of their viewing machines where booked (boooooooooooo),but I did find 2 will and probate records relating to Joseph and his grandson John.

Shaw Joseph of Brock Street Liverpool shipwright died June 6 1896 administration with will (what does that mean?) Liverpool July 4.
Looks like beneficiaries are James Shaw freight clerk and Ellen Royden wife of Thomas Henry Royden.

Is she Josephs daughter because I can't find a marriage?

The next one is my great grandmothers brother John Shaw who would be Joesephs grandson.
John Shaw 98 Rosebery Street Liverpool died February 10 1957 at Newsham Hospital Anfield.
Probate Liverpool March 29 to National Provisional Bank ltd.
We have a copy of a will which left everything to his nieces from one of his sisters,so why would it say his effects where in probate?

Any help would be fantastic as I am a little confused by it.

Thanks everyone Julie

lancashireAnn Report 22 Oct 2009 13:17

you would not get any more detail than what the parish records have said. There will be no other record, except perhaps banns - the one I gave you is from the site

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

which is a full transcription of the record held in the parish register

Julie

Julie Report 22 Oct 2009 13:14

Thanks Ann will I need to go to Liverpool records office to get a copy of the marriage, because it is before registration started

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 22 Oct 2009 13:09

you already have Sarah Hamson's marriage and the children's baptisms - see p2 of your thread

Julie

Julie Report 22 Oct 2009 10:42

Well I have just received James' birth cert was only expecting it next week because of the postal strike.
It says he was born 27 March 1840 and registered on 14 April I think.
He was born at Fisher Street and that looks like the family home, mother is Sarah Shaw formerly Hamson.
Thanks to everyone who has helped,I might try and chase that marriage up pre sept 1837.

Thanks again Julie

Good luck Julie, and do let us know the outcome please.

Oh and thank you for the info Ann.

Still searching, but I never have seen eye to eye with online parish records so it may take some time.

Julie

Julie Report 18 Oct 2009 19:40

Take care Julie

lancashireAnn Report 17 Oct 2009 16:49

they are from one of the online parish clerks sites

http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

Lancashire is probably one of the best but Liverpool coverage is a bit intermittent
There used to be a v useful search facility but unfortunately that is suspended with technical difficulties at the moment but worth keeping an eye on

If you are after a different county just google online parish clerks & it will give you a list of the counties which subscribe - about 8 I think

lancashirebmd.org.uk is another useful one. If you can find a marriage on there (it is updated regularly) it gives a clue as to which church to look at

Let me know if the church you want is not on line & I can try Lancs record office for you next time I wander in.

Ann...
Showing my lack of knowledge here but...
Where do you get the baptisms from that you have put up please?
I can never find any that have the fathers occupation on other than the london ones on Ancestry.
And do they include RC amongst them?
Just that I have some liverpool ones I would like to find for OHs side.
thanks
