Not sure, During the First World War he was 1st Lt' Officer in The 1/13th London Regiment ( Transport Section) who were known as the Kensington Boys. In 1940 he was promoted to Captain and transferred to The Royal Army Service Corps. He must have done something outstanding to have such an honour given to him.

You are right I am fairly new to all this so I apologise for seeming a bit dumb, I'll tell Alexander that there's a namesake in the family.
I think there may possibly be a Jewish connection, I've met two people unrelated over the years with the name Kingaby and their families originaly came over from Russia as Jewish immigrants.

I guess you may be newish to all this.
James Ball's parents were James Ball who married Mary Ann Sarah Kingaby making her Mrs Mary Ball.
By the way I THINK that Mary Ann Sarah Kingaby's father was ALEXANDER Kingaby.! Not sure of this and still checking it out.
Have you got Ancestry?

Sorry, I meant to ask you Wendy, why would James Ball's parents have a different surname, Kingaby, do you think he changed his name for some reason? Regards Brian

Thanks Wendy
I appreciate you clarifying the situation for me, I hadn't said anything to my son so he will be non the wiser. It's confusing when you get two Rosettas and no record of James and Rosetta ever getting married, that's why I assumed the wrong conclusion. I just want to find out now how Sydney got his MBE.
Best Regards Brian

Sorry to disappoint you but there is not any Norwegian blood in your part of the family.
Rosetta junior, the daughter, was Sydney's half sister. Same mother different father.
So Sydneys parents were the Rosetta b 28/11/1818 baptised 04/02/1821. - that WAS married to Hans - and James Ball b. 08/07/1859 baptised 14/08/1859 at St Anne's, Soho, Westminster. I can't find any record of Rosetta and James Ball marrying.
To go back another generation with James Ball, I think his parents were James Ball and Mary Ann Sarah Kingaby, which would be your wife great great great grand parents.

Hi Wendy
Just logged on
Sydney A Ball MBE was my wife Stephanie's grandfather, he had two daughters one of which was Caryl. Caryl married Steph's father who is called Jack Latham. Can I now assume that Rosetta and Hans daughter Rosetta is James husband the photographer (my wife Steph's Gt Grandparents) and that mine and Steph's children Alex and Kate have Norwegian blood. If that is the case my son Alex will be absolutely thrilled as he likes anything Norwegian. He's into Lord of The Rings etc.
Best Regards Brian

HI Brian
From what I have found Rosetta and Hans had
Harold Ackrill ref Camberwell 1d - 787 in 1873 Rosetta Edith ref Camberwell 1d - 743 in 1876
Rosetta and James had
Joseph Richard K b. Ramsgate Kent reg Thanet 2a - 890 in 1881 *Gertrude Daisy b. Herne HIll SE London reg Lambeth 1d - 518 in 1883 Robert Henry b. Herne HIll SE London reg Lambeth 1d - 537 in 1888 Sydney Arthur b. Balham reg Wandsworth 1d - 803 in 1894 There may have been other children after 1901 but not according to the 1911 census which the original would tell you how many births she had had and how many of the lived
* Gertrude was known as Daisy and she was baptised at Balham as Daisy Gertude in Feb 1899 when she would have been 5 I'm sure it was her with parents James and Rosetta and father a photographer. See my previous post on this. Who are you descended from is it Sydney

I have just turned my pc on and to my surprise found a a wealth of information from all of you, Ann, Wendy, etc. You are all extremely kind. It seems the family is full of mysteries.
Would I be right in saying that James Ball and Rosetta Ackrell had daughters Daisy, Gertrude, and two sons Robert, Sydney Arthur Ball later to receive the MBE. Also we don't know why he was awarded the MBE. Rosetta and Hans had one son Harold and a daughter also called Rosetta.
Regards Brian
