I might read it as Provendent.
About the only thing I can think of is something like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_and_Provident_Society
-- she might have been employed by a provident society?
If you search the 1881 census by occupation alone, for Provident, it gives 23 people with several occupations along that line.

Hi Bernie,
Not getting anywhere with the occupation at the moment but am I right in thinking that you believe this 'Hamle' is your Ann ???
If so, could I point out that Hamle A is in fact MALE.
A 'may' just have found him on 1901 where he is a Police Constable but that is not yet certain as he has a different name (I will work on it).
Could I just ask - on Sarah Ann's birth cert, is there any indication that she might be a twin? - Could you give the details you have from there please? Is there a time of birth mentioned?
Dea x

Hi Dea
Yes I have seen that Hamle is male but like I posted earlier Im clutching at straws. Birth Cert reads. 4/9/1871 Eaton Bray Beds Sarah Ann Girl Father Thomas Henley Farm Labourer Mother Mary Henley formerly Janes The mark of Mary Henley mother Eaton Bray Reg 5/10/1871 William Brown registrar
She was not a twin but another sister reg Ann was born in 1870 but died 3 days later Births reg Leighton Buzzard
The only other Henley born in Eaton Bray around this time is Arthur but I cant find him either in 1891 so maybe its him.

This is what I have been looking at Bernie,
I do think that Hamle A is in fact Arthur - this is the one who is a Policeman on 1901.
I think he is a cousin of your Sarah Ann - He was registered on the same birth reference no. as her, which is why I thought they may be twins.
However, his father was Joseph, who I believe was the brother of your Sarah's father Thomas.
They were obviously both born within weeks of each other and perhaps the two mothers (sisters in law) went along together to register the births?

Hi Dea I have Arthurs death in cemetery records in 1905 and didn t think he left the village, but you have found another piece of my puzzle. You are right about Joseph.
Thank you

Jan - from the image, 1891 - that HUNLEY is indeed HENLEY, clear as day.
(You want to make the correction at Ancestry??)
HARMESON is actually HARRISON.
But she's single, and there wouldn't seem to be any reason for the different surname.
edit -- Annie Harrison in 1881, independent existence from Ann Henley:
Name: Annie Harrison Age: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1872 Relation: Niece Where born: Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire, England Civil parish: Eaton Bray
Name: Ann Henley Age: 9 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1872 Relation: Daughter Father's Name: Thomas Mother's Name: Mary Where born: Eaton Bray, Bedfordshire, England Civil parish: Eaton Bray

Thank you for still looking ladies. All of my info on census from Eaton Bray comes from fische film at Dunstable Library . In1891 I have Frederick, Rose and William living with their father Jesse (widow) in Gammons Lane. I do have a Jane from around 1855 who was Jesses cousin but she was born in Eaton Bray.
Not seen the hunley entry so will check again.
I have seen people entered twice on same census before like Ruth Henley 1860 on the 1881 census. Is this a common event.
