Is it possible that Tryphena had a baby for Cecilia and Arthur? Cecilia and Ralph were married two years before Ralph was born- perhaps they couldn't have children?

I wonder what mother's name is listed on Archibald and Ethel's birth certificates??

Yes, I've previously passed on info to the Pomeroy Family History Group.
Arthur and Cecilia were married in Oct – Dec 1877. Their son Ralph Allan Pomeroy was born on 26 Dec 1878. About 12 months later -sounds about right.
It seems that for some obscure reason Cecilia added her sister-in-law's name "Tryphena, formerly Dyke" and omitted her own second name "Anna" from the entry on his Birth Cert. Very Strange. I guess the Birth Certs of Archibald and Ethel (the right one) might answer the question once and for all.
You guys have certainly come up trumps on the Dyke and Roberts angles. Thanks again.

Who was the informant on the birth cert?

I don't know where the Cardiff Pomeroy family fits in.

The Informant on the Birth Certificate is "C. T. Pomeroy Mother 83 Broad St". The birth was reported about 5 weeks after the actual Date of Birth. It's possible that Cecilia had returned to her home in Wales with her baby and her Sister-in-Law Tryphena (Dyke) Roberts had reported the birth and put some confused and inaccurate information on the Certificate.

You're right, it is possible that Tryphena registered the birth after Cecilia returned home, and that, as informant her information was confused with the mother's information.

However, just a thought- it is also still possible that Tryphena was the mother of Ralph- (looking at the ages of Tryphena's children, it is quite possible that she could have given birth in between Alan Thomas and Gertrude Milly.) However, if this is correct, it doesn't seem that she was mother of Archibald.

Martin, if you do find out anything further- either through Cecilia and Arthur's marriage or through Archibald's birth certificate, I would be interested to know.- I've quite enjoyed working with Jan to try and sort this out- move over Miss Marples!!!

You all did a magnificent job. I have one more question which was prompted by Christine's Shipping Records.
Ralph Allan Pomeroy went fom UK to Cape Town in about 1896.
If anyone has access to Shipping Records for this time I'd appreciate finding out more details of of his voyage. Also any other Pomeroy's who might have travelled to SA btween 1895 and 1914. This might tie up details about Archibald and Ethel.

I,ve looked at findmypast and confirmed the following

I'm certain that this is Ralph Allan Pomeroy emigrating to Cape Town. His date of birth was Dec 1878. He may have “adjusted” it to make himself appear older as he was in fact only about 17 at the time.

POMEROY A Unknown M 1908 Southampton South Africa Cape
I'm almost certain that this is Archibald William Pomeroy emigrating to Cape Town. His date of birth was 1880. He was about 28 at the time. I'm not sure whether he married Irene in Cape Town or UK but their son Arthur Shubrook was born in about 1909. It all seems to fit.

This is Arthur Shubrook Pomeroy's father William. I have a complete set of Wedding, Birth and Census documents for him and his family in Taunton and Langport, Somerset. What I can't find is any record of his birth in about 1811 in Taunton. It probably exists somewhere in Parish Records but I haven't been able to find anything yet.

With this inheritance, I don't see their 9 year old daughter Ethel ending up in an Orphanage ?
