You'd have to pay to access the 1911 details, but I wouldn't be surprised at a mistranscription or misspelling in the original.

I don't think it could be someone your uncle Charlie married -- married in 1911?

Can you give us any more details about him?

Hi EvieBeavie

I never thought of mistranscription. My Uncle Charlie married in 1930 to a Frances Pickering, in Middlesbrough. The family story is that he brought my father up after the death of their parents as my dad was only 8. I don't know how old he was at his death but will try and find that out and come back to you. As I said earlier have not been able to find his birth record either but I did find a Charles William Place born in Durham in 1909 so this may be him.

Yes, I've been thinking William's name was actually Addison ...

Births Mar 1905
Addison Charles William Middlesbro' 9d 659

That looks like your uncle.

I never thought of that Evie. Why would he then change his name to Plaice? and then my Uncle as well? The mystery deepens.

Yes you have found the right record for Charles. I may now look for Roberts birth under Addison as well.

Hmm. 1911:

PLACE CHARLES WILLIAM 1909 2 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding

edit -- yes yes yes!!!

The rest of the household is:

PLACE EITH JANE 1910 11 MONTHS Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding
PLACE FRANCES 1885 26 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding
PLACE WILLIAM 1883 28 Middlesbrough Yorkshire North Riding

I have no idea why I didn't find them before when searching for others in Frances's household.

I expect that's EDITH JANE (the census result does say EITH JANE). And that's your missing aunt?!

I'm not seeing a birth for an Edith Pla(i)ce, Addison, Lowery, Webley ... in the timeframe, i.e. registered in 1910 sometime.

Thanks EvieBeavie,

This looks like the right family. I will investigate these further!

Wilma - I never knew that Robert's first name was John!! I don't know why the spelling of the name has changed though,

Once again thank you all who have helped me solve some of the mystery about my ancestors. I will come back again when I get stuck LOL

The Charles Place born in Durham in 1909 is indeed more likely to be your Charles than the Charles Addison I found.

In fact yes -- I searched for Charles Place in 1911 in Middlesbrough *born in Durham* and that's what he was.
