Thanks Julia. The family that had the Australian connection had a son John McGibbon Moffat who must have travelled to Australia as he is mentioned as joining the Australian army c1941, would it be possible to have another look for me,as far as I know he was born in 1910 so he would have been a good bit younger than his siblings who seem to have all been born between 1887 and 1901. Cheers Ian

this is what Ancestry has to say about the lists
About UK Incoming Passenger Lists, 1878-1960 This database is an index to the Board of Trade’s passenger lists of ships arriving in the United Kingdom from foreign ports outside of Europe and the Mediterranean from 1878-1888 and 1890-1960. Information listed on the passenger lists may include: name of passenger, their birth date or age, port of departure, port of arrival, date of arrival, and vessel name.
For more information about this database, click here. This database is an index to the Board of Trade’s passenger lists of ships arriving in the United Kingdom from foreign ports outside of Europe and the Mediterranean. Exceptions to this are vessels that originated outside of these areas but then picked up passengers in European or Mediterranean ports en route. The UK port of arrival was not necessarily the final destination of the ship. In addition, the names found in the index are linked to actual images of the passenger lists, copied from The National Archives (TNA) collection series BT26.
The passenger lists date from 1878 to 1888 and 1890 to 1960. However, many of the pre-1890 lists were irregularly destroyed by the Board of Trade in 1900. Therefore, there are not many lists included in this database that date from these earlier years.
Separate lists were kept for British (and Commonwealth) passengers and Alien passengers. In addition, there was a variety of form types used throughout the years. These differences in forms may result in a variety of information recorded for different passengers.
When it is available, the following information is included in this index:
Name of passenger
Birth date or age
Arrival date
Port of departure
Port of arrival*
Ports of voyage, if recorded
Vessel name
Shipping line, if recorded
Official number, if recorded
Source information (TNA collection number, piece, and item numbers)
*The Ports of Arrival listed are the final destinations of the ship. However, if the ship had a stopover in the UK en route to another destination, it still had to have a passenger list filled out.
Additional information such as the passenger’s occupation and intended address in the United Kingdom may also be listed on some forms. From the 1930s entries included the abbreviation, “T”, if the visit was for the purpose of tourism.
There is a record of the Flaminia arriving from Sydney on 17th April 1960, but no Brierleys on board.

Hi Julia, I am researching my grandfather John Turner, could be William John Turner. He left England about 1905-1915. He may have left from Mancheater and departed in Hobart. later to either Melbourne or Sydney. He was born 1881 either Yorkshire or Manchester. I see you have been very busy so if you have time much appreciated. Regards Barbara

There is no Eva Wildon born 1887 on the lists. Was that her full name, any middle name?? Would she have travelled with anyone??
She may not have come back by ship.

Theres this one, returning from USA rather than Canada though, and rather later than you said.
Harriet Wright Birth Date: abt 1851 Age: 68 Port of Departure: New York, New York, United States Arrival Date: 21 Dec 1919 Port of Arrival: Southampton, England Ports of Voyage: Plymouth Ship Name: Imperator Shipping Line: Cunard Line Official Number: No official number listed Occupation Ladies MAid Travelled 3rd class Address 707 Aylestone Road, Aylestone, Leicester Country of last permanent residence USA Country of future intended permanent residence England.
Is this likely to be her? Its the only Harriet Wright with correct birth year, there are lots of others, would she have been travelling with anyone, was she married????
If you have any other info, I'll look at the others.
