Hi there

I'm still trying to find details on Mary Vaughan -

she had a child Edwin Vaughan born 1850 in monmouth union workhouse. Edwin was an illigitimate child so i know there is no use tracing his father however i can't help but think i must be able to trace Mary and her parents etc. I've been provided with some info from census records that lead me to believe she was approx 30 in 1851 and possibly born in gloucestershire - can anyone help me find any more information on her asi am unable to go back further without this?

Did she marry after the birth of Edwin? If so, her fathers name should be on her marriage certificate so will help you trace her through the censuses or birth/baptism records.

unfortunately we don't know - and i have no way of checking (as far as i know - i'm not really up on family research - still just beginning). I was thinking perhaps her birth certificate, but i guess you have to know birth year and location?? is that correct? gosh i'm struggling! lol

thanks Ann, can you tell me where that info is from? unfortunately it doesn't make much sense to me. Edwin married a Martha Saxton in 1871. It was his mother that was Mary, belived to be born in 1821 (according to the 1851 census) in Gloucester??

Here is Edwin's christening from the IGI but no new info

Do you have Mary on the 1861 census and any other census? Does it give her birth place and any profession?

You won't be able to get a birth certificate if she was born around 1821 - birth certificates only started in 1837. You might be able to get a baptism though from the IGI.

Can you post all the details you have for the 1851 census, and hopefully some other kind member can find her on the 1841 or 1861 to help.

i have her on the 1851 census with Edwin, age 30 born gloucester. but in a later census, 1861, she is shown as being 46 and a general servant - so there is a jump in age somewhere!?? this is a nightmare! lol. thanks

Is she in Monmouth in 61? Does she have any more children? What part of Gloucestershire does she come from?

thanks for the help everyone! Selina - unfortuantely i the only info i have on her is that provided! i'm told the census records say birth place of Gloucester and thats it - though i haven't seen it myself. the 1861 census shows her at 46 (although as mentioned the 1851 census shows her as 30!?? ) unfortunately, i don't know if she had any other children - i believed Edwin to be an only child! this is a mystery it seems
