JUDITH 2/8/1890 Bicester George Cartwright 25 yr bachelor Labourer of St John's Street son of Joseph a labourer Sarah Knowles 23 yrs widow of this parish daughter of Michael a labourer, married by Banns witnesses G. Cartwright, Sarah Ellen Cartwright
Baptism in Bicester of 10/8/1888 Knowles. Elizabeth daughter of Charles and Sarah. Soldier, Windsor. This above is exactly as the transcript reads. Please bear it in mind for a while. I looked for a marriage for Charles Knowles and a Sarah, but there were a few and of course there was no maiden name for Sarah, only her father's christian name, no good for a marriage index record. So I looked in the 1881 census for a Sarah, with a father Michael who had lived in Marsh Gibbon Bucks. Here is the entry I found you will find it 1881 Stratton Audley district 7 living at Pool Farm. Michael Parker a Ploughman born 1834 Marsh Gibbon wife Elizabeth born 1837 Marsh Gibbon children Joseph 1863 Marsh Gibbon Thomas 1865 Marsh Gibbon Sarah 1867 ditto John 1869 ditto Elizabeth 1871 ditto Henry 1873 ditto Louisa 1875 ditto Frederick baptised 9/3/1879 Stratton Audley Sarah Jane baptised 8/8/1880 Stratton Audley Now this is all very straightforward but there is another baptism which may have a bearing on the baptism of Elizabeth Knowles in 1888 daughter of Charles Knowles and Sarah, please look back at it 23/7/1891 Ralph WINDSOR Parker son of Harry William and Blanch Jane. COLONEL . of Caversfield.. so perhaps there is a military joining up of the Parkers and Knowles' I found it interesting. You may now be able to find the marriage of Sarah Parker born 1867 Marsh Gibbon daughter of Michael Parker to Charles Knowles c 1887 they did not marry in Stratton Audley, nor Bicester. Hope you find this as interesting as I did. Sorry if you would have preferred to have done the census lookup yourself, but I got carried away. Margaret

Margaret,
many thanks for the very interesting information, looking up the census was fine by me, (especially as I spent a whole week once looking for one person and her name both christian and surname spelt differently on all, thank goodness she had other family members) Unfortunately I now live out of the area of Oxfordshire/Berkshire where most of my ancestors were so no access to local records office.

Margaret,
How usual/unusual is it to have 2 living daughters with the same name albeit one had Jane as a middle name. no luck yet with the marriage of Sarah & Charles.

JUDITH I came across it once before, when the first son was born illegitimately, but was known by his father's surname. They baptised him later than his legitimate brother of the same christian name who inheritied the farm. Perhaps your Sarah Jane, was always called that, but on a later census she is known as Sarah when she is housekeeper to her father who is a widower. Perhaps they pronounced the names differently, Saree, Sarah, Sarah Jane. Both Sarahs appear on the same 1881 census as children of the parents, so it seems quite odd but true.

JUDITH Sorry George 1821 did not marry in Bicester. You will need to go through the census to find out a bit more about where he is living and where his wife is from to be able to find their marriage place.

JUNE sorry no baptism for Jane Ball in any of the Thame parishes, which include Crowell. Her marriage was 11/4/1751 Crowell, but only the baptism of Elizabeth 22/2/1752 26/8/1754 Jonah 17/10/1756 John in Crowell. There was a baptism for a Jana Hall 24/9/1727 in Stokenchurch daughter of Evardi, probably should have been Edvardi, so if that is a mis transcription so could the Hall be, as there are no other Halls until 1800.

Hi Margaret Rose
Can you please see if you can find the baptism record for William Gillett c1818 --
he state he place of birth ( on his Army Record ) as Parish of birth: Sarsden Town of birth: Chipping Norton - on the 1881 census he states Churchill -- 1871 census Chipping Norton
On his married cert he states Fathers Name as William Gillett - Farmer
I have a thread http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards.page/board/trying_to_find/gillette%20-%20%20francis%20william%201906%20believed%20yorkshir/thread/1222796?d=desc
That url looks very odd --
it is on TTF Board -- Gillette ( the final E was added in 1936 )
Many Thanks
Irene

JUDITH, sorry George Hunt did not marry in Littlemore, the marriages began there in 1847, before that they were recorded in St Mary the Virgin in Oxford, not there, also in Iffley, not there.

On the 1851 William Gillett and Susanna are living in Worcestershire in Evenlode he is a farmer of 70 acres employing 2 men. Sorry can go back no further, I think they came in from Gloucestershire, so I cannot help.

I wonder if you could do some lookups around the Enstone area for Chadbon (aka Chadbun and Chadbone) I have a Robert Chadbon born c1775, he married Ann and they had at least 4 children - Thomas 1808, Robert 1813, John 1816 and Daniel 1821. The age gaps suggest there are others. Would be very grateful for anything pre 1837 that you can find.
