Bad spelling is not as bad as textspeak - that really annoys me, especially as I do not use text at all so I find it hard to understand. apart from that, surely textspeak should be left to mobile phones, requests should be made as legible as possible.

Ah Angie

I do agree with you to an extent however when its the same people again and again you cant use that exscuse. We were all newbies at one time and had to learn. Everyone on here is willing to give advice to newbies and often do. I know Reggie constantly points people in the direction of the free bmd sites but to no avail I'm afraid.

Over the last hour I have endeavoured to help 3 people - NOT one of them has responded to the replies I have left on their posted message!!!!!!!

Perhaps I should forget about helping people and concentrate on my own tree!!

Angie you're right, we have a number of members who constantly ask for lookups as they have no intention of putting their hand in their pocket. If their hobby was golf, would they expect someone else to buy their clubs & pay their green fees?

Sorry I no longer help such people

Dear Christine,

I am just reading this message thread. I have only recently started using the threads (since this weekend). I am a paid member of Ancestry (UKonly), Findmypast and GR (also use FreeBMD), however hit a brick wall on all these sites for a part of my tree. I was given some fantastic help and now try to help with any requests that are "at my level". I'm often much slower than you experts!

I have one question as to how to delete a thread from my My Threads list. Can I only do this by deleting all of my individual entries to the thread? The only drawback with this is that some of the information might be key to someone else (in the event I have given assistance). I've looked around the site, but have not been able to find out how to "delete" from My Threads.

I thought I'd ask before I do anything frustrating for other members.

I'm on line for another 15mins - if no answer before then, I will check later this evening when I get home.

Many thanks.
Rebecca

I do agree with most of you. I used to spend a lot of time doing look ups for people only because I have got help in the past and been very glad of the help I have received. I always thanked the person for their help. Now I do not help as much as I used to.
I have 3 pet hates.
One - when as soon as I help someone they pm me and ask to see my tree.
Two - when you answer a thread then you get a pm asking for lots more information.
Three - when I get a pm thanking me and it just says thank you and I do not know what I am getting thanked for. I have to look all through the boards to see what help I had given.
Feel better now I have had a little nag.

Hi Rebecca

Was just trying to make the point that sometimes i go back to a message to help - and the question I asked hasn't been answered.

I've never posted a message myself - but I'm sure I'd follow it up if I did!

Taken a while to answer - was cooking & eating!

Hi Christine,

Thanks for the reply. Good to know you guys and gals actually do take time out to eat every now and then! I've learned a lot this weekend on how to search better, just with one simple question. I'm on my own in Holland doing research on my family, so only internet access. This weekend has taught me a lot. Just reading threads and seeing how you all search. I've done quite well on my own till now - 8 generations on the maternal side, however my paternal side was going nowhere until this weekend. Turns out there is probably a name change! I'm awaiting a birth cert to see if I can verify this. I would never have thought of it. A very kind guy caught the bone and didn't let go. He searched on a different surname as the middle name is quite rare and came up with a line which might end up being my family.

My gratitude goes out to all the experts on these forums who give up their own time and now I also understand money to help others. I was too naive to believe that those asking questions wouldn't have their own subscriptions....... I'd rather do the searching myself as it's such a thrill when you trace one of your ancestors. I don't want to miss too many of those kicks having others do the work.

Happy hunting,
Rebecca

Hi Shelly

Your messages are much easier to read than textspeak!!!
Rather have misspellings any day!!
Cheer up!!

Shelly I can read your message & it's split up into different paragraph which makes life easier.

The ones we don't like are the people who use textspeak ie they use l8r instead of later. Fine for Chat & General but if someone asking for help they need to bear in mind that some of us are no longer teenagers!
