at the bottom of the page, where the source data is...it'll say either extracted from LDS records.... or this record was submitted by a member of....

Well if her husband is missing it won't mention him at all....

As he remarried in 1885 and she still had the Gannaway name, you need to first find out if it is her.

If it is her, it'll explain why she never remarried and gained a new name. She was still married and didn't know where her hubby was to divorce him! ...and in a sideways way prove he was a bigamist?

She maybe was more aware of marriage laws and knew she couldn't remarry. But she'd have been alone at least 13 years by then?

Woman back then preferred to be married. Thats along time without a husband to provide for you.

yes i might do, but if she was married to charles won't it simply say wife of charles gannaway, or do you think it might give other clues. perhaps also the birth certificates with checking point as fathers name, which i have one the marriage cert, i'll have a look when i get home.

thanks,
Leanne.

I have a similar thing in my tree, only she's changed her name too....

She also did the age and widow status thing also....and changed Counties.

Make it more interesting tho....

If i were you i'd get Amelia's death cert, see what it says....

yes i see where your coming from tracey. i'm used to lying in my family research, i'm sure none of them ever told the truth! lol. thanks for all your help, i've got to get back to work now, am just having my lunch but i will check back later incase anyone has any more ideas.

again thank for all your help.

So this means,

He's moved City's stated he was a widow when it looks like he wasn't and he's lost years of his age...

That all fits a bigamist trying not to get caught?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 1 May 2008 13:44

thats also very possible...

In which case we need to fin both side by side on each census....

If however we cannot find the corresponding person (including transcription errors) you might have to face the facts he lied even more....

Bearing in mind you cannot find a death for his first wife, maybe he lied about his age thinking it would make it harder to find he's lied??

she was 38 when she died in 1897 so that would make her born 1859. he could have done i suppose but then why not say he was the same age?

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 1 May 2008 13:43

How old was Emily?

Did he lose years to try and make him nearer her age?

:) still smiling :)

:) still smiling :) Report 1 May 2008 13:42

perhaps the one that married amelia was different. he could be the one born 1839 and mine could be the one born 1850?

:) still smiling :)

:) still smiling :) Report 1 May 2008 13:41

i'm not sure, i think the 1850 one is more likely. on his marriage to emily c plummer his age is 35 whish would make sense for an 1850 birth.

oh dear it's making my head hurt!

WayneTracey Report 1 May 2008 13:40

I think this could well be your Charles???

Births Jun 1839

Gannaway Charles Lymington 8 181

With the 1871 census looking like 32 making his YOB 1839/40 i think the second birth is more likely him....

This would make the other census's fall into place a little better?

hmm, he's a toughy.it's with him that the family move to london. i have them back to 1700 in southampton according to IGI i still need to check it but i am in contact with a couple of people who can help to corroborate that. maybe he thought london and southampton were far enough apart that they would never know. and then all of his children are apart in 1901 and according to my grandfather (sydney's son) the children then went to stay with their new stepmother who he thinks was possibly spanish which i thought would make sense if he was a ship steward. but i can't find a marriage afterwards either.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 1 May 2008 13:38

looking at the image again it could well be he's 32.... which would make his YOB as 1840? lol

We've already got his birth registration as 1850? see below...

WayneTracey Report 1 May 2008 13:36

.....and Amelia is twice his age in 1871???

Perhaps he thought there was a high chance she was already dead when he married his second wife??

:) still smiling :)

:) still smiling :) Report 1 May 2008 13:35

yes i thought it did seem probable, but there are a couple of census' available for amelia and charles but they appear to change ages. first one has charles as 22 which would fit and sencond has him as 42. i have been going round and round in circles on this for a while! thanks to you both.

WayneTracey

WayneTracey Report 1 May 2008 13:33

well his other marriage is in london..... perhaps he thought he wouldn't get caught and it was worth the risk?
