Tried to find any of them in 1901 census, where are they!!!!!!!
Maryb
I have been looking at your tree and who you think the James seddon was. I found him in 1871 with brother John and sister Mary 1848 she married James Batersby and it is their son who is with James and elizabeth Seddon in 1891. 1871 census 10,High st bedford area of Lancs Disrict 9 image 40.It also says James age 28 is a widow. He then marries Elizabeth O/N/D 1871. I found a marriege for James Seddon to Emma Thompson in Salford 1869,but I can't find a James or Emma Seddon in Salford 1871. So could this be the same James?

Believe it or not folks, I have doubts about the James from Bedford, I wish to forget about him and will change my tree accordingly. The reason is simply to do with Cecilia's fathers 'Occuaption' - it says 'Machine Fitter' and until I find a James with this occupation I cannot just guess at who it could be.
I was told through 'chinese whispers' that she may have "been adopted by a vicar" but she was known as 'Elizabeth Seddon' - the plot thickens and causes me sleepless nights. So I go to the marriage certificate in 1892 and it states she was 'Cecilia Seddon, 'Hooker and stitcher' aged 21 witnesses J Diver and M Booth. I looked under Elizabeth Seddon on the 1891 census just as an afterthought and found to my amazement an Elizabeth Seddon (born 1872) at 36 Phoenix Street, Hulme, manchester - occupation a 'Hooker' in a 'H.L' perhaps meaning on a hand loom??
Well if anyone has any thoughts about this perhaps they could add them. I went back a few pages and came accross an 'Emma Booth' 4r yrs of age and a widow, living at 41 Phoenix street, Hulme. and a 'Miriam Booth' aged 19 working as a 'Hooker 'FL' - so wonder if this is the 'M Booth' on the marriage cert. But no seddons anywhere on that census area of Manchester for 1891. And was her father deceased I wonder? I am now totally confused and eager to find her dad, a machine fitter, because until I find her dad, I cant find her mum...but it makes me wonder if the James Seddon who died in 1878 and was on the same page as a 'Cecilia Booth born 1813' was something to do with all this. I may just order his death cert to see if this is her dad. Now what does everyone think of all this? Am I just trying to make things fit?...... Regina

Hi Regina.
Have you looked into this family at all, just a wild card but Mary e 1873 may have changed her first name for some reason? And James has the correct occupation.
1881
SEDDON, James Head Married M 37 1844 Machine Fitter Iron Leigh Lancashire SEDDON, Elizabeth Wife Married F 32 1849 Leigh Lancashire SEDDON, Mary E Daughter Single F 8 1873 Scholar Leigh Lancashire SEDDON, John Son Single M 5 1876 Scholar Leigh Lancashire SEDDON, Elizabeth Daughter Single F 0 1881 Leigh Lancashire SEDDON, George Brother Single M 35 1846 Imbecile Leigh Lancashire
Registration District: Leigh Civil Parish: Bedford Municipal Borough: Address: 3, Derby St, Bedford County: Lancashire
Then they all go missing on 1891. I cant find them anyhow ...
Edit..yes I did,and its the same lot that Maryb looked into,so scrap that and back to the drawing board.

Cecilia has not been found in the 1901 census after marrying in 1892 a George Thompson. By this time they had children : Nellie 1894, Ada 1896 and George (my grandfather) 1898, all born in Manchester,. Emily 1901 may have been born in 1900 even, so perhaps if I find her, I can send off for birth cert. it will at least give me an address for her and her parents, but if she was born in 1900, its a wonder she cannot be found with them in the 1901 census isnt it.? There is a George Thompson (1870) in an Army Hospital in Surrey as a 'Private, Patient, and a Cecilia Thompson (1872) in London working as a 'costume Sales Lady', coming from Cardiff! but nothing for Emily their daughter. Will keep searching folks and let you all know. bye for now. Regina

can you delete your new posting on Cecelia please - not allowed by GR - I have been looking for her and now find you already have this posting

by the way, as I have said on your other posting - a machine fitter is an engineer as in fitter and turner

Hello Ann and others, just to let everyone know that the two births for Cecilia Seddon ,
Births Dec 1872 Seddon Celia ..Prescott 8b 655
Births Mar 1876 Seddon Cecilia ..Prescott 8b 746
were not her. As both died within a year of being born I think. Plus the father was a John Seddon, a 'Miner' by trade, (the mother Emily Dennett)....whether they went on to have a Cecilia yet again am not sure.
The James seddon (father), who was a 'Machine Fitter' and deceased in 1892, is not popping up anywhere. Plenty of James Seddon's who seem to live past 1892. The one in 1881 census, in Derby St, Bedford, Leigh, lives till 1898.
Would anyone agree with me about this possibility ( is only a guess and nothing much to go on at that) -
When my grandfather George Thompson Jnr. (1898) married in 1922 in Holy Trinity Salford, his address was 19 Fleet St, Salford. His father as we know was George Thompson (1870) who married Cecilia Seddon (1871).
On the 1851 census, I see living at No. 9 Fleet Street, Salford a
John Seddon (b: 1803, Clifton, Lancs) - Beamer Francis (wife) b: 1805, Paris, France James son b: 1834 Clifton Mechanic John " b: 1836 Clifton Edwad b: 1839 Worsley Ann b: 1842 Salford
Could this be my James Seddon the machine Fitter? I cannot find the children, however, after this census, only the parents at a new address.
The other thing I wish to mention is on the marriage cert for Cecilia and George back in 1892. There were 2 witnesses. one a J Diver (or Driver, cant read it properly) and M. Booth - the link with the name Booth makes me wonder if Cecilia's relatives married a Seddon? I see this is in
1881 census - 13 Green Street, Aspull, Lancashire, England Family History Library Film 1341899 Public Records Office Reference RG11 Piece / Folio 3759 / 99
Edward BOOTH Head 44 Ashton, Lancs Coalminer Elizabeth BOOTH Wife 44 Haigh, Lancs John SEDDON Stepson U 29 Haigh, Lancashire, General Labourer Ann SEDDON Step Dtr U 16 Aspull, Lancs, Cotton Weaver James BOOTH Cousin 9 Haydock, Lancashire, England Sophia BOOTH Cousin 7 Haydock, Lancashire, England
Well has anyone any ideas as to where to go now? I am well and truly stuck ! This ancestor is proving hard work on my behalf and on members of genes, who up to now have proved very very patient with me. from Regina.

Regina. It's been a while, but if you ARE still looking. I have traced a James Seddon: 1871 UK Census 3995.144.38. Chester Street, Hulme, Manchester.
His FATHER (George Seddon) is an engine fitter, whilst JAMES is a lithographic printer - which seems to dove-tail neatly with George Thompson's father's trade.
I don't know whether this is purely co-incidence or if this happens to be Celia/Cecilia's father as a young man - and/or she's confused her father's name/trade on her marriage certificate?
