Information about Boyd's London Burials

This ancestry record set is an expansive collection completed by Percival Boyd in 1934 as an index to 242,844 burials in the London area from 1538 to 1872. Boyd's London Burial Index covered parishes as a one the most comprehensive registrars for male deaths at the time in the cities of London and Westminster, as well as south and east Middlesex.

The family history collection only contains male names is a sign of the times, as explained by Boyd:

'Only males are included (children being omitted when so designated in the registers), because for genealogical purposes the date of a man's death is more important than that of a woman who, unless she were sole [unmarried] or a widow, could not make a will except with the consent of her husband.'
