THANKS ALL I HAVE NOW CONTACTED THE GRO.
ON HIS FIRST MARRIAGE TO ELLEN BEADON THEY HAVE HIS NAME CORRECT.
I know it's only a little thing but, I have had messages by email and friends that they cannot find it due to the name, there are loads of Albert E WIGGINS AND ALFRED E WIGGINS ON DIFFERENT SIGHTS AND SOME IN HAMMERSMITH.
EVEN ON HIS BIRTH CERTIFICATE 1896 HIS FATHER IS NAMED AS FRANK HENRY BUT ON my parents MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE IT SHOWS FRANK EDWARD maybe my nan had an affair who knows.
She was Elizabeth Tidy who married a Frank Henry Wiggins on the back side of my fathers birth certificate it says Henry Frank I am completley confused.
Any info you want to send will be greatful thanks again Carol.

yep ..........
it's the same on ancestry
Name: Alfred E Wiggins Spouse Surname: Buchan Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1942 Registration district: Hammersmith Inferred County: London Volume Number: 1a Page Number: 503 Find Spouse: Find Spouse
which of course is not surprising as both freebmd and ancestry used the original GRO Index to make their transcriptions.
That means that the GRO Index, once held at Kew, is the source of Alfred
and THAT cannot be changed

I looked at the image of the page from GRO .................. and it is most definitely ALFRED on there

I was only showing what you get the price is irrelivent.
If you have been a member since 2003 you must have had a standard membership as Genes didnt hold any records back then.
I started using this site in 2010 as a gold member as the platinum was'nt around then.
Is this the marriage....index says Alfred E ...so it is not Genes or FMP's fault
England & Wales marriages 1837-2008 Transcription Print transcription View image Attach to tree First name(s) ALFRED E Last name WIGGINS Marriage quarter 4 Marriage year 1942 Registration month - MarriageFinder™ ALFRED E WIGGINS married GRACE K BUCHAN Spouse's last name BUCHAN District HAMMERSMITH District number - County London Country England Volume 1A Page 503 Record set England & Wales marriages 1837-2008 Category Birth, Marriage, Death & Parish Records Record collection Marriages & divorces Collections from Great Britain

Taken from freebmd.... Would imagine ancestry is the same
Marriages Dec 1942 (>99%) Buchan Grace K Wiggins Hammersmith 1a 503
Wiggins Alfred E Buchan Hammersmith 1a 503
Ancestry Name: Alfred E Wiggins Spouse Surname: Buchan Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1942 Registration district: Hammersmith Inferred County: London Volume Number: 1a Page Number: 503 Find Spouse: Find Spouse
So yes they are all the same

Carol
what we are trying to say is that a modern-day transcriber has transcribed the information on those censuses AND all bmds into the index that you find on FMP and ancestry
Transcribers of all records have to put down what THEY see NOT what they imagine or know it should be.
So ............... if the transcriber "sees" Alfred instead of Albert that is what is put on the index.
BUT as GR does not transcribe its own records, but accesses the ones paid for by FMP .................. then you have 2 options
1. Contact GR, and then wait for them to send the information over to FMP and get the wrong information noted. THEN wait again for GR to get access to the "amended" records
2. Send the information to FMP ................... which I think means joining that site.
But also, as we said, some sites do not change the index ............. they add the corrected version to the index
But, really Alfred for Albert is rather minor ................. most people would recognise that they were the same people.
One of my husband's ancestors had a much worse transcribing than that in one census ......................................... due of course to bad handwriting
Try finding Hayhurst when it has been transcribed as Porst :-D
Regarding your membership level ......................
If you have been a member since 2003, you would have initially been a Free member as that is how GR began
Standard Membership began in late 2003 / early 2004, and cost £5 at first, rising slowly to about £7.95 by 2007, when GR was sold by the people who started it
Gold membership was started in about 2008 ....... or when records were first added to the site
Platinum membership began about 2009/2010
Gold membership was dropped last year or the year before.
In her post, Jax was trying to show you that GR does indeed tell you what you get for your Platinum membership. It's very hard to read because it all runs together, so I have copied it again, and spread it out for you. It is very clear that some things are extra .........................
"Platinum subscription offers the same features as our Standard option, as well as unlimited access to: .......... All census records .......... All birth, marriage and death records .......... WW1 and WW2 death records
Platinum subscribers can ALSO CHOOSE to ADD other niche record sets (such as Parish records) to their subscription."
That last sentence means that you have to pay extra to get them

Sorry Jax, I am a platinum member, but as a pensioner of 66 can't afford to do it in one lump sum that is why I do it for 6 months, but thanks.
I have my family tree and have been resurching for years now and have all the cenus records from The National Arcives in Kew as they are not far from where I live, I have never had the Standard member ship.
Yes I have looked ay the index image and have all the certificates that shows my fathers name as Albert Ernest Wiggins which is correct and on his birth certificate, but G/R show it as Alfred on a marrage, I have my parents marrige certficate thet clearly shows Albert Ernest Wiggings 17th Octber 1942 I lived at home till the day I got married in 1970.

Dear all, thanks for your reply, I have checked all orginal records and my fathers name is correct as I have all the original certificates and cencus from the National arcives in kew.
I am down as a platnium not premium (my mistake sorry for spelling )member and pay nearly £70 puund every 6 moinths that comes out of my account.
I am not with any other site, I was with FMP before joining G/R, could this be a typing error as we all make mistakes, or are they photo copied on to the site.
Thanks again

I don't think you could have been a premium member since 2003 unless you are talking about Ancestry Carol
Now you could of taken up FMP offer recently which was £49.75 which included everything and more......Except no community boards or sharing of trees.... Too good of an offer to turn down.....renewed end of August expires October 2015
Yes FMP was a tad difficult at first when they made the changes, but they have been working on improving it since.... I for one do not have a problem with it

I agree with DC ..................
GR do not "own" any records ........ they are allowed to use them by FMP which did the transcribing.
It is after all possible that your father's name is wrong on the original record ........... have you ever checked the image, or checked another site to see if they have the correct or incorrect version?
have you checked the site most of us for bmds, if that is the record you are referring to .........
www.freebmd.org.uk
if in a tree ................ then you have to contact the tree owner, not GR
If in a census ................ then you need to contact FMP, but only after checking that darn image!
If it wrong in the image ............ there is not much you can do, except attach Alternate Information or a Post'it to the record so that others will realise.
I have never subscribed to a higher level than Standard on GR .................... they did not have the records when I joined in early 2004, so I joined ancestry in addition to GR
I did not need the records on here by the time they provided access in 2007.
I understand that the extra charges are for records which are not covered by any previous deals that GR may have made with other sites, and that they themselves have to pay extra for them
Is it unfair to pass that extra coat on to members???
I have no idea ................
I do agree that they should be open
................ I much prefer ancestry, and get all that I need from that site.
BTW ................ posting on this Board will get you little action
If you really want to complain ................................
send an email to

GR cannot change any records as they do not own them
They use records from their sister site Findymypast and others
But they have never transcribed any of their own records.
That is why your fathers name has never been amended.
And when considering change, where might you consider changing to
FindmyPast - has been riddled with problems since an overhaul some months ago. Has gone from one of the most user friendly sites to the least.
Ancestry - Good but expensive
The Geneologist - cannot comment as I have never tried.

Would also like to add my father's name was Albert, G/R have it down as Alfred I have reported this three times over the last three years and was told each time they will change it, BUT IT STILL HAS NOT BEEN CHANGED.
I wonder how many other people this has happened to and they end up not being able to find anyone.
Another reason for me to change.
